One of my clubs is Aberdeen and Stonehaven and they do the most inspired thing on Wednesday night racing to encourage people to stick around and socialise. When you sign in for the race and you can also sign in for fish and chips afterwards and one of the OOD duties is to send someone up to the chippy after racing. Generally by the time people are changed and packed the boats away one of the race team arrives back with the chips. Works great, the bar is packed afterwards and people get to know each other better

and If you can get people to hang about after even better for all. One element that’s by far the most inportnt of any club, and shouldn’t be sacrificed at any cost, but could be enhanced by it.

I certainly agree with a lot of this, I too went to cycling because I was frustrated with having a tidal racing calendar that dominated one or two days of my weekends and wasn't compatible with family and other commitments. However, having moved to a club not hampered by the tide (as much) I think the atmosphere generated by the other sailing and non-sailing members and shore facilities are very important. You don't want to hang around after Park Run, its a park or open field location and there hasn't been anywhere to change at the two I've done. However, as with many of my fellow competitors, I like hanging about the sailing club after racing, having a chat and occasionally a beer, it's part of the relaxation element for me.

I suppose the amount of distraction and absorption from daily worries sailing can offer will vary hugely depending on the waters available.
Perhaps as a body of water the Blackwater estuary would connect slightly better than (no offence) the Datchet concrete punchbowl. I am inclined to forget how lucky I am in the scenic locations I have had and do currently have to for me sail firstly and race secondly at.

Could work. I already use yoga postures in terms of teaching sailors to sit upright on a side deck, rather than hunching over the tiller extension. Downward facing dog could be tricky!
Oddly, I only find sailing clears the mind if I'm racing. |

Perhaps we could come at this a little differently.
Instead of the Park Run model, think, Beach Yoga. Wellness, mindfulness and stress relief are currently in vogue. Forget racing in any guise and concentrate on sailing, nothing like it to clear the mind of internal angst or remove "the monkey from your shoulder". "Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing — absolutely nothing — half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats." |

For this to work, I can imagine a local sailing centre lining up a dozen Picos, some Teras, Fevas etc and renting them out for £x per session on a Sunday morning for people to imitate other people running round a park.
That post was supposed to be positive, but a I wrote it, the sadness of sailing school Picos round a simple course every Sunday morning just depressed me. |

Agreed, old used kit is not appetising but, TBH, if you can spend on the kit you need for a park run (which I'm sure most who do more than the odd one will do) with half decent trainers costing £60+ it isn't such a huge step to buy the kit you need for sailing. Sure, it does cost a bit more but it can be done for under £100. And, anyway, if somebody is keen enough to try sailing/surfing/kayaking/SUP they probably go to a centre first anyway and use a hired wetsuit so that is obviously not enough to put them off.
