especially in the class showcasing a youthful, dare-I-say, media friendly 'couplings'.... it's was supposed to be like Celebrity Love Island on Catamarans... until Santiago showed up and gave them a good dose of experience.

I have a feeling that deep down the Olympic bods like all forms of diversity except age. Everything is about the young people of the world, and a one lunged grandad winning gold isn't the ideal they are after. Horsey events have this trouble, too.

blimey- imagine that, a Chinese woman winning a medal in a sailing discipline.... stupid sport, lacks diversity. Next they'll be telling us some South American grandads have medalled too....

Other than the normal PC requirements, the big one is TV ratings and emerging markets, a few years back a female chinese windsurfer was in medal contention, can you imagine what that did for their ratings in China? |

I'd imagine the same conversations are going on athletics as in sailing. Thing is the different running distances suit different body types, the field events also. What they have in common is that each event takes an extreme of that body type to reach Olympic levels, so there are hardly any moderately tall high jumpers or moderately wide shouldered hammer throwers. At club level, as with sailing, I'm sure there are athletes who enjoy a certain event even if not quite suited to it, just as there are small Finn sailors.
Diversity comes about by having boats suited to a variety of body types, whatever the boats are. You could possibly do this by having the Laser 3 times each for men and women, introducing a Big Boy rig of 9m2 for the current Finn sailors, who might then have to run more and weight train less. Use the 4.7 for light weight women, Radial and standard for both.Be a bit boring, though? Set weight bands for each rig, bit like boxing. Same ring, same gloves, different weight catagories. |

Why do you need diversity? Sprint athletics can only be won by those ethnically from West Africa, the reality is that they are superior.

Blimey, go sailing for the day (at the Olympic venue, as a coach for trials for an international event) and the forum goes mad again.
Good reading all this stuff. From what I saw today, maybe we should scrap the Paralympic sailing attempt and simply use boats in the Olympics which can be sailed equally by men, women, light, heavy, able or disabled, full inclusivity. The price for that? The Hansa 303 is slow. But racing was very close. And the great sailors will come out ahead. Seems we are producing many sailing "events" for the Olympics which have no popularity at all. Foiling cats? If that was a separate sport, would it get into the games on numbers participating? Would skiff sailing, even? But sailing 2 handed dinghies and singlehanders dinghies and keelboats that sit on the water are pretty popular sports world wide. All we have to do is find common kit for the best round the world to get together and race fairly. |

The thing y'all are missing and personally I don't give a toss if sailing remains in the Olympics or not, but that's what's at stake here. Sailing is all those things, 1st world, none diverse either racially or gender so you should consider it lucky that you have wind or kitesurfing to spread that diversity and relatively quickly. As for TV ratings well we all know how that's going.
Personally I fought really hard for years to keep kiting out of the clutches of the RYA and was gutted when those speed sailing dicks sold out to IFCA to get their speeds ratified. But it's in, there have been a few high level sales meetings talking about the format and the Neil Pryde group are ramming a One Design kite set up into play as fast as they can, the only reason we've not seen it over here is the guy charged with setting it up doesn't yet know his way around (he's asking me ffs so you can imagine the steer I gave him). On another note, The powers that be in S.U. Paddlesport are also trending toward the BCU as governing body for their future which could have fallen into RYA and similar MNA's hands another example of the fallout caused by their crap attitude to the governance of windsurfing in the past. As far as sailing is concerned, this could be the last roll of the dice and the whole issue gets its arse kicked out by the IOC due to crap TV ratings and then only finally will they realise what a complete and utter f**k up they've made of it all.
