Maybe boats with a lower standard of sailing have a wider competitive weight range. See what I did there, bringing two threads together :)
In fact, in general sailing standards are very low in most classes. How much effort to actually improve sailing do most people make after the first year or so?

I find it interesting that it doesn't appear to be a set weight that is right for a boat, but, as was pointed out earlier, a set norm. That the ideal weight for a Radial is different for men and women shows that quite clearly.
The other thing that becomes obvious in most conversations about all this is that heavy think light have the advantage, and light think heavy do. Maybe it is only the mid weights in a fleet that have the confidence to do well in all weathers? |

Yep - does seem that you can be competitive at 95kg in a H2 and probably heavier too but interestingly two guys did pretty well at Draycot Dash last weekend in the races they sailed when you consider they were on 1015 and the boat normally sails off the same as a d-zero and they were both pretty light (Chris Gould is very light). I am lucky in that I am heavy, run alot but still have solid knees!!

Big guys would be better suited to the H2 though, all that weight buggering up their knees on offwind legs, it's bad enough for us lightweights, but it must be hell for big guys, especially if they get what I get a lot, cramp at inopportune moments usually when I'm already on my knees..

I agree that it would seem that some of the modern classes have a wider weight range than older classes, the H2 and d-zero spring to mind and although they overlap the H2 can carry more (although I also accept the Phantom carries a wide range). Weirdly the d-zero and H2 are lightweight boats which earlier posts seemed to indicate would be more susceptible to being the right weight...

I'd add some classes have a broader 'reasonable range' than others.... I don't want to sound like D-Zero fan boy, but I have always been impressed by the range of sailing weights that seem to be competitive enough in the class to have good, close racing.

I think in general weight isn't that important as long as you are within a reasonable range for your class and in fact, is often used as an excuse for doing badly in a condition. If you're the best sailor you will still win regardless if its a drift off or a hike off.

Mozzy there did seem to be a couple of others saying similar.
Does make you laugh when looking at weight and BMI I think virtually all International Rugby forwards (and a lot of the backs) would be classed as obese.

Hardly 'everybody' then Gordon? Or 'most here'. I think most here are talking about the physics of sail power, sailing modes and hull shapes.
I guess what Wiclif is suggesting, is that for people who are carrying excess fat (not just heavy) then in the process of loosing that fat if they were to exercise rather than just diet would likely make them fitter as well as lighter. Although I've known people who have lost fat and got heavier and fitter, so not always true. |

it's quite ironic... when I dropped from 106kg to 78kg, I ended up with pneumonia, recurring coughs and colds, a general sense of fatigue and irritability. It took 18 months to build up body strength and get some semblance of fitness back - fitness loosely speaking. On the plus side, I was using smaller windsurf sails to get planing in 14 knots for the 20 minutes or so I could manage without feeling exhausted.....
My target weight is now 85kg... although I'm a little over at the moment though but snowboard holidays are booked and that always focuses the diet and fitness programme. As for next summer - I'm not sure what boat and club plans are at present.... but I think it make sense to buy a big guys boat and be light for it, if there's no local class racing options that appeals.
