the 4.7's lower mast is cranked at deck level as the centre of effort would be too far forward otherwise ...

there's a reason the M is rare ... it's rubbish ... it uses a shorter top mast and the standard full rig lower mast meaning the centre of effort etc is all wrong |

Thank you for everyone's thoughts. I'm narrowing down to a splash and byte cii, although the latter appeals. I promise to eventually update this thread with my eventual choice and feedback.

Stay away from the ' M ' rig it's was rubbish in the 70s and it's no better now. Rig is too stiff and just evil. If you want to go the laser route, get a radial.

Not sure, one of the variants uses a cranked mast, but looking at pictures of "M" class it appears straight.

Wasn't the M where they changed the topmast, not the bottom, making a stupidly stiff rig?

Their is a rare Laser "M" class on ebay at the moment, might suit you wysiwyg70, much smaller sail,

Yes a guy at our lake sails a Splash with varying degrees of success, can sail it in almost anything and often does extremely well on handicap, so another positive vote from me, not that I've sailed it but I've sailed against it and been abused on handicap by it on many an occasion.

My wife's / son's / my old Splash, being sailed by it's new owner (15yr old?) who competed at European level with the boat. We all sailed it and loved it. Me especially when it was honking. Fantastically well balanced rig to hull which was comfortable and well laid out.

Yes. A Splash is a superb boat. That deserves more take up in the UK.
