A old-ish 470 from a Eastern European country would cost pennies ... must be the way to go... |

Buy a 470 locally and get some some small sails for singlehanding in a breeze.

420s can be plenty of fun when it's windy, I've sailed one with an all
up crew weight of about 18-19 stone in a force 8 or so (no trapeze).
I've not tried single handing one with the trapeze, haven't had an
extension anything like long enough! They're quite easy to single hand
(for me anyway), though the trapeze could be a bit tricky! They're nice
to hike from though. As it's a symmetric kite that's not really a
runner when single handing which may narrow your choice a bit,
depending on whether you want to use that when you don't have a crew.

If they sail 420s there why not buy a local 420, I'm sure you could get a good one for your budget.

My parents have just bought (and done up) a house in We are not sure how to get the boat out there since trailing it would really not be too great. On the last visit over there it appears there is a very small sailing club very near the house which sails 420/470s. I have no idea what the dinghy market is like in The criteria are as follows: 1. Double handed, but able to be single handed off the wire to some extent 2. PY hopefully close to or slightly less than 1000. My dad is a competent laser sailor but no more! 3. Under £2500 used
4. Pref. not made by topper A laser 3000 seems like a good bet or a 470 which is a bit quicker and could possibly be bought over there. The 420/laser 2 don’t look to exciting but not sure how well single handing a 470 will work weight wise, so maybe the 420 may be better?
Either won't be anywhere near as much fun as my 14 though |
