Harder on a sail with a stretchy bolt rope on the boom than with a loose footed sail, but any decent sail maker should be able to do it.

I know this is an old post, but how easy, in practice, is it to shorten the leach? I am having a similar problem getting under the boom, and instead of a different boat (streaker, solo, lightning 368).Perhaps this is a viable alternative? I have a spare sail on my Europe.

Thanks getafix will check those bits carefully. The boat is from 2002 and I believe it has had very little use though (the last owner bought it in 2006, never raced it just pottered/blasted up and down and has not sailed it at all for the last 3-4 years), under the grime it looks as if the hull is almost pristine. The issues are with UV damage and muck from settled rainwater as the cover deteriorated (it has been shredded for the last year at least). I'll give it a clean and re-rope this weekend so I can see what I have.

My 3p worth as an ex owner of Blaze's.
Don't worry too much about the condition of your first Blaze sail, it's worth upgrading after you've sailed it for a couple of months (or many depending on how often you get out). The semi battened sails last a long time and even a really worn rag is good enough for a laugh in F4 or more. Do pay attention to the slot gasket underneath and mast step & foot. The slot gasket is easy enough to sort and there's plenty of tips about - having a loose one or crappy condition will be like chucking an anchor over the back. If the boat's been abandoned most likely it has a tin mast, since sailing them with very loose shrouds some have well-worn mast foots/steps, just check you're getting a good fit to avoid any jumpiness when gybing in fresher/windy conditions. |

Ok I think I have secured a deal on 'the abandoned Blaze' and will need a couple of used sails to get it race worthy, A North 'Red' Blaze sail and a Fire sail. If anybody has anything please PM me. I'm Manchester based but will be in North Wales in a couple of weeks and around the New Forest for a few days on Nov 31st so could collect from those areas (or in transit to or from Manchester).

One day GRF will realise he still lusts after a Blaze after all is said and done (its a bit like that 'ex-girlfriend' thing for him ... )

As a windsurfer and Spice sailor I intend to stay standing up when not hiking ;) I will buy some knee pads though as they seem essential kit for all modern singlehanders.

* Essential kit for a Blaze - Knee Pads - buy the best you can with plenty of padding
* Sailing - Don't pitch it upwind - sail a little lower and a lot faster * Gybing in wind takes practice - just like most fast boats * Get on the wings as soon as possible - it helps power up the rig * Go to a few Blaze Open meetings - very friendly bunch (discounted Nationals pricing currently) * Upwind in most conditions sit as far forward as possible on the wings Enjoy! |

I once bought a used Fanatic Shark, possibly the fastest submarine on the planet. The name should have been the give-away sharks swim under the water...... I took it back and swapped it for a Naish Supercross, my favourite board ever, I still have it and sail it.

I'm still quite good in the light stuff so a boat that flatters my weaknesses (Blaze) rather than my strengths (Solution) might be the better choice. Will see how the discussion with the owner of the local Blaze goes before the next step.
