My vote is the 400, in fact I am thinking about one for a winter project at the moment. They can be picked up for £1500 and the sails are fully battened so seem to last forever. I would rather turn up at an open with a scruffy set and do alright than spend another grand on a good set and still just do alright. Then the following year, maybe splash out on some new sails. I can't imagine that the whole fleet is on the new style sails yet and apparently they don't really make any speed difference anyway so there must be some good old style sails going VERY cheap at the moment.

Try an Osprey. A better sea boat by far than a 400

RS400 seems to be taking the lead here.

Get a 400! perfect weight for one, great sea boats, especially in the choppy solent, easy/fast to tack for when you inevitably short tack up the solent shores and there are plenty around the solent if you want competition

Depends on your crew weight. There is quite a lot of sail area and in a F4+, a middleweight crew would have no difficulty trapeezing, especially if you are beam reaching with the genny.

The use of the trapeze is technically outlawed by class rules for racing but if you can persuade your club to give you a dispensation, the Class Association used to suggest using the PY -10, i.e. 1082.

Sounds like a good example for sale here: http://www.laserstratos.org.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=948
though maybe a tad above your budget.

It's not the most exciting boat but it gives you the chance to do a bit of trapeezing when not racing and is big and stable enough to pop over to Fisbourne for lunch with a couple of friends...

To be honest, I'm pretty amazed too. Whenever I've sailed one I've wanted plenty of space round me.
