Well we finally made it on the water with the old Tasar. 8 stone girl helming and me in front. We sailed two pursuits as part of our winter series. A bit of wind in the first one and we managed to get in front of the Supernova hoarde until the wind dropped. Race two little wind....my do they stick in the light!
Good fun though, filled the time between lunch and pub nicely.

I do not think the clock will ever turn back at our club as the convenience of single handers is now entrenched. It was a great shame that our Sunday sail did not work out however as I was a much better crew than I will ever be a helm and I felt quite nostalgic.

This is EXACTLY how the Fireball fleet at HISC is being regenerated. It does take commitment, and social media can ease the burden of phoning around all the time, but from the odd one occasionally last year to 6 on the water without much effort most weekends now and double that if we try a bit shows what can be done. |

Though there are more single handed boats at our club, there are probably more people sailing double handers. 2000s, a couple of RS200s, a Merlin, K-6s and a few Javelins, Tempests on Wednesday evenings.
Parent Child teams ... hmmm no; not since Mr K-6 bought his kids a 29er; but mixed teams a-plenty, the majority in fact. Double handing isn't dead after all. Though yes, it takes commitment, a lot of phoning around to get teams together and decent sized fleets so that you can pair people up when their usual partners can't make it.

Well, I was disappointed on Sunday. A young lady friend of mine (who is a pretty good helm) decided that she would like to try my Tasar. I duly dragged it out of the bushes and we wheeled it down to the water. Predicted windspeed was 20mph, a bit much she being only about 8 stone and me 11 but we tied an empty oil can to the mast, just to be safe.....However with the jib on but furled the boat blew off the trolley twice. In fact it flew some distance away from the trolley! Upon consulting the wind speed indicator it was gusting 34....inland. Abort that idea then!
We will try another time.

It's an interesting point, but we've found that there is stuff available now to largely solve the problem. A thick fleece hat makes a big difference, as does filling the gaps beneath the wetsuit that you mention. A layer of polypro and they are normally hot to the touch on undressing. In autumn they wear aquafleece over the wetsuit. When it's really cold underneath. But it's also clear that lots of kids are cold because they simply don't have enough gear on!

I agree totally- all my sailing (except one training session at Rutland and DZ demo) has been coastal this year... and I haven't stepped foot in a club either, except for the coffee I bought Fanbuoy😉

The successful clubs will be those that can cater for the "bored and ashore" as well as the sailors.
Failing that, drive to the coast, we're surrounded by briny stuff you know....

No, they quit years ago... there were those of us who loved the sailing and social side, and others who just did it because that's what their families did and dumped it at the earliest opportunity, usually around the age when the opposite sex start to become interesting. There were even other siblings who might even have had the gumption to say they didn't want to do it anymore still young enough not be left on their own. They usually sat glumly in the corner of a damp clubhouse playing Tetris and Super Mario Bros on a first gen GameBoy. I guess today they'd be on snapchat or instagram. I think society has moved on, and offers more diversity for young people to try different things. And that's not a criticism of those who still maintain traditional family sports- especially if, like in your case, the kids get so much out it. But like Graeme, I'll let my kids find their own path, support them with it and fully accept, that living where we live, a plastic beach life at a reservoir isn't going to really appeal to too many people. |

one of the problems with kids and sailing is the cold factor - most kids feel the cold very easily and a growing room and keeping warm aren't always compatible ( dry bags aside ) which can be an issue with regard to cold feet etc ....
but then again having seen the amount of money friends who dance reasonably serious burn through on pointes the cost of dinghy boots is not that bad... |
