We will have 27+ boats on our little lake, quite a crowd! Will it be considered bad form if I protest somebody?

I think for the purpose of creating a new World Record in the name of Andrew Simpson, they are doing just fine.... much as it would have been useful to have run the event using PY and collecting the data as a result, there's a part of me kind of glad that the race will go-off without the usual bullsh*t around handicap racing and cheating etc.

I have noticed a few things with the Barts Bash stats, some of the double handed boats are getting double counted as Crews and Helms are down separate. So not sure how useful the numbers are.....

It's interesting to look at which classes have so far attracted the biggest entries for this Sunday's Bart's Bash. Although it won't tell the full story, due to the set up of the event (large scale club racing rather than fleet focus racing like a nationals would be) you could argue that it is a good snap shot of what is popular in the UK and around the world at club level this Sunday, almost like a sailing census.
The top 80 classes (hopefully this has pasted ok) are below as they stand at the moment; oh and the cadet isn't doing too badly... |

Punky, using the maximum national title fleet to measure class activity, rather than the average, appears to create some very odd results.
The Laser 2 hasn't had a nationals since 2009, had 14 members when last reported, and had just 379 races recorded under PY for 2013, so it's hard to see how it could be "larger and more active" than classes that have over 40 boats at the nationals each year and record from 8900 to 2242 races under PY like the Fireball, Scorpion, Merlin and Phantom. The Laser Pico hasn't had a nationals since 2010 and had just 844 starts under PY so is it really a larger, more active class than the Supernova (60 at the last nationals, 5097 PY races,) Lark and Streaker? Exactly James - we love sailing our 300, but prefer to do so with other 3s. And we have an absolute giggle before during and after sailing!

I suspect it represents each class' 'peak popularity' and shouldn't form too much of measure what's current or not- for example it would suggest that the RS100 is higher up the figure than the RS300, in reality my perception is that the 300 is having somewhat of a renaissance with a good short to medium term future, whereas the RS100 is well, erm, not.
A quick check of the 2014 PY races tally, suggests the 300 is 33% more popular than the 10.2 and 8.4 combined- in handicap racing anyway, but I doubt there's great swathes of either club racing in fleets.

Radio sailing is part of sailing, so it is normal that there stas are included.
I find it interesting that a radio sailing class is up there with some other respectable classes - Iam surprised that the International One Metre and the RC Laser are not included. In fact radio sailing stats are misleading because events are always limited to 76, or sometimes 82 entries. There may be more who wish to enter but cannot. The Marblehead Worlds this year had far more countries represented than some 'International' classes. |
