Make sure the people you'll be sailing in the company of if you are going to race the boat (or have fun in company) are in tune with you - people make sailing enjoyable - the boat is in some ways secondary.

My situation was slightly different, as a dinghyist returning after 20 years out of anything smaller than a channel ferry! However, one decision that I made, and stuck to, and worked, was to buy a boat that needed NOTHING doing to it. I also determined not to change anything for a year - no hasty changes based on fashions 20 years out of date.

If you don't have the confidence or knowledge to check a prospective purchase youself, ask for help. Most sailors will be glad of a chance to examine & poke another boat!

Make sure all the string works as it should!

I suppose my number one piece of advice for couples is "never buy a new boat as your first boat", having witnessed some nasty disagreements over the first scratch...

We do a lot of training at Lee on Solent of adults and cadets and one issue is helping them to move on from the basics into boat ownership.
I am doing a talk next week to offer guidance I intend to cover the following topics is their anything I have missed.
Choosing the boat
based on type of sailing.
size of people and skill levels
offering various suggestion for boats from Toppers through to 2000 depending upon these factors.
Where to find boats
Internet sites
class associations
club notice boards
chandlerys
What to look for when you go to see one.
sails in good nick
Foils
trolley& trailer condition
Hull damage depending upon class.
price comparison
All help gratefully received, and if you want to come along and laugh next Tuesday at 7pm Lee on Solent SC.
Many Thanks
Gordon
