I've tried doing the wild thing to fly the windward hull in a Vortex, and there are two issues. The first is the amount of heel you have to put on to lift the windward hull clear of the water, and the second and crucial one is that all your reactions are reversed. If you've got dialed into your brain that if the boat comes on top of you you push the tiller, and if it heels away from you you pull it, then steering from the lee side all this is reversed, so its very easy to steer the wrong way and end up with a boat on top of you. I later wondered if the right way to get down the run might be to get right out on the wire and fly the *leeward* hull, so that the rig was over the weather hull. But with kites its maybe another matter. |

just been watching some of the video of light wind sailing
Some interesting techniques with crew trapezing forwards off the front beam (presumably to lift the sterns out) upwind and then out on the leeward hull to fly the windward hull whne going downwind I'm going to try these out on the vortex next time out in light wind and see what happens ........ |

![]() Now isn't that a special sight?? ![]() The sort of thing you routinely see round the dinghy park. This is a rudder head fitting on one of the Canadian boats, its fabricated from flat plate, and I reckon there are about 10 pieces exquisitely fitted together, and there are two of these on each of their boats... Both Groupama and Hydros have a quite different shape. Whereas NA boats have generous rocker, quite even, minimal hulls and raised tramps the euro boats have flattish floors, and all the rocker in the mast daggerboard area. The stern treatment on both looks not dissimilar, but I suspect Groupama's a bit more moderate. Both have more freeboard and flush tramps.
I did chat briefly to SHC about this, he commented that both he and Fred Eaton CAN work hard on minimising hullskin area and thus weight, but with hulls aft they are in diminishing returns territory 'cos they have to add some reinforcement. Edited by JimC - 25 Sep 13 at 10:07pm |
