And in the Nave-ambrosia series of BC56 there was a bit of an issue when new fangled cotton was used to reinforce what were otherwise woolen sails.
Mind you the NAve Ambrosia was sailed in relatively balmly temperaures!

They had the same problem of too may classes too, viz: the Navis, , Lunter, Cymba, Lembus, Cumber, Moneris, Ratis and Lintriculus just to name a few. They used to use the Portus Adurni impedimentum tabula to sort out the results until the Visigoths protested.
