Hi, i am 16 years old and weigh aroung 55kg, i currently sail a mirror (yes i know they're slow) still now i would like something faster however i now need to be a single hander as I don't have a permanent crew. I was thinking something like an RS600, RS700 or MPS however i don't know if i'm heavy enough, other suggestions are welcomed. I deffinately do NOT want a laser though as i am not a fan of them. Finally our reservoir is very shallow (1.5m ish) so large boats are not very good. Any help would be much appreciated.

The problem with shallow and any boat liable to tip over (in your suggestions above) is that you'll soon be on first names terms with your insurance claims department.... it's not ideal.

What else is sailed at the club?  You shouldn't be restricted to just a Laser Radial, but it might help if you've got someone else to race against.

I'd suggest working your way along to the Trapeze singlehanders - get some singlehanded skills in a smaller tippy boat first. Byte CII springs to mind as one to try, where you can learn about controlling a rig which is similar to the faster boats.

Google would say Yes!

I'd say go for the single handed or jump to a the RS200 fleet as a crew or helm. The 6 or 7 will be a fair jump from a mirror IMO

An old uni mate of mine, Ben Ward used to sail at Beaver. He started out in a Laser, but then bought a 300. He was a pretty handy 300 sailor but bought a house and went yachting! Anyway back to the issue, he generally sailed at Beaver with the daggerboard a few inches up all the time to avoid grounding. From memory (we had an ANUSC champs there, thanks to York Uni), many of the newer boats sailed at Beaver have chopped down foils!!!!
If you want a faster singlhander at Beaver, they used to have a good Dart 15 (Sprint 15 fleet). At 55kg you'd be ok on a 15. We have a young lad (about 14yrs old) sailing one at our club and he seems to cope well.

I do as a matter of fact sail there, thanks for the advice at the moment, there are a few solos and such like at our club but I don't really like them, like the laser. The 15 sounds like a good idea, i will check that out soon

yep... I remember it well, although not quite as much as the sh*tfight that entailed when we held the Ladies BUSA qualifiers there in '99.  (Ironic, at Beaver SC...) I ran out of credit twice on my phone dealing with all the protests....

A student in 99 with a mobile phone!!!!! You Durham boys certainly had all the mod cons.

Hi Tom

 I was in exactly your position last year; my choices were the RS300/600 or a lowrider moth. My thoughts on the 3 and 6 were I would just sail with the A rig. Although I did try a 300 when it was windy and was able to keep it pretty flat. In the end I ended up borrowing a moth for a year.

 

How good are your woodwork skills? The farr 3.7 may be of interest, although there isn’t a fleet, it may suit your needs.
