I only ever hear positive words about the 300 on these fora. Which in summary would be "Rewarding to sail, but have a steep learning curve at the beginning". This has never sat comfortably with the fact new boats aren't selling (although to be fair 4 seem to have sold this year). I never could understand this contradiction, because never a word on the downsides has been spoken.
Anyway was over in SA and found this quote from Iain C (who presumably is the same of this parish). Apart from being funny it's the first time I've heard downsides:
This certainly does provide a counterbalance that explains the sales challenge. BTW: Not trying to knock the boat as I really like the shape, it looks good sailing and was considering one earlier in the year. |

The last sentacne somes it up, i have only borrowed one a few times, if you refer to one of my ealier posts, it takes about 4 months of sailing everyweekend. It is after all a bloody quick single hander (PY 1000). Not many if any you can take out in a F4 without expecting issues.
Ians post is excellent in highlighting why the 300 struggled to sell (cost new now aside) people expect to jump into it and get it round a course in any wind straight away, well i am affraid it aint that simple...

Wish I had the time for more real world experience, but with young triplets I get allowed out 2 hours per week for sailing. So agreed, real world experience is expensive and words are cheap...c'est la vie. |

I remember trying one when they were first launched, at the time I had an Int Moth and found the transition fairly straight forward, but watching some of the Laser sailors have a go made the boat look at a little more interesting. Not saying I could jump in one now and it would certainly take a few months to get up to speed.
But from what I can remember it was great challenging boat to sail.

Why knock it if you have not tried it bit like the 100 really loads of them sold but a lot of people selling them soon after as they seem too much for them as for 300 i took me three months of sailing it then i could sail it all the way the course up to thirty knots without too many problems overtaking a contender upwind when it was blowing was a highlight for me ................. anyone else had one like that

Don't mean to come across as knocking, cause I was seriously considering one. I just couldn't reconcile the massive positive feedback from this forum with low sales - it suggests the whole truth isn't out in the open. I don't know Iain C, but given he sails a 49er and has sailed Cherubs and 12 ft skiffs he can't be a bad sailor. Have you kept your 300, if not, why not....if you could change something about it to make it better, what would it be? These are the kind of questions all classes are asking all the time and usually do something about it if sales stagnate. Exactly the kind of debate classes need to survive. |

Iain C is the same on SA as he is here (I believe). he is also a very likeable chap and a pretty good helm to boot.
Reading his experiences he obviously had problems with it. Whether this was just his lack of experience and technique required for the 300 or whether this was something else I could not say. I have heard plenty of people say it is a difficult boat to sail but very rewarding once you master it (one of these guys is up at the front of the Fireball fleet globally so he must have some sailing talent)....

Guys as i mentioned earlier Ian has said in his post that he had only borrowed one a few times. I came to sailing a 300 after a few years in an i14 and i found it a steep learning curve.
As i said in the previous thread (same title as this one) I believe the 300 does not sell because it doesn't have full buy in from RS when was the last time you saw it advertised. if you want one you need to wait for 4 or 5 buddies to decide they want a new one, then RS will build you a boat. i can't be bothered to work out the cost again, but if i remember it was the best part of £9k list price with a road trailer and covers. Which makes it expensive when you compare it to other RS boats.
Stretch, I can guarantee you, you would not be disappointed if you bought one, but an hours test sail is not going to be enough for you to get anywhere near enough out of the boat. You will almost certainly come back feeling beaten and wet. This has NOTHING to do with ability more that the 300 is an unforgiving beast that rewards time in the boat more then any other boat i have sailed.
Why did i sell mine (well i owned 3 over the years if thats any help)? its nothing to do with the boat or the people that sail them, it was kind of political...As mentioned in your last thread about the boat i won't be going into it on this forum again. Edited by Ruscoe - 15 Dec 11 at 4:56pm |
