So, no, sadly no joke eventually went to the opticians the other day following some wierd visual stuff that had occurred first whilst sailing and it appears I have; Posterior vitreous detachment; which if I kept up what I'm doing, could lead to retinal detachment something far more serious.

O.K. it's age related and more likely for folk who are a)Myopic and b) Very active, not that anyone warns you of stuff like this.

So a heads up for all and any that may fit that group, if you're short sighted, don't take up dinghy sailing in later years, the guy said (not knowing what I get up to) best stay out of the garden for a while, no sudden strenuous exercise.

So that's me screwed for windy days and humping dinghies about for a bit.

Or go blind of course..

Damn depressing.

Bummer...does it mend over a winter layoff?

That's bad luck grumpf. Oddly/Interestingly/disturbingly I just wikied Posterior Vitreous detachment and one of the things mentioned was 'floaters' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Floaters

I never knew it was something that other people might also see. I thought it happened just to me when I'm day dreaming. You learn a little everyday.

Hope you can find a work-a-round to that glitch GRF.

Yes I guess a winter lay off starts early, I had planned to get another boat and keep it down the lake to keep my hand in and try and perfect that butt dragging hiking style they all use to great effect.

Floaters, ignoring the obvious connotation we all have from time to time, there's just a greater incidence now, what happened to me was during a fairly windy race and I was a bit stressed, even shouted rude words at a lass in a 470 when she sailed over the top of me in very windy gusty conditions I seem to recall which is un characteristic, (not the shouting, the word I used).

I'd got what I can best describe as mini lightning flashes going on in my right eye and they wouldn't go away as I strained to check the mark to see if I was on the layline and it happened just as she came past. That must have been the moment of initial detachment or the beginning of what followed which can best be described if you are contact lens wearer as the continued sensation of having bits of broken soft contact lens hanging around in your eye.

Naturally as I do with most things I ignored it until it became clear it wasn't going to go away and now I know. It's depressing in that it is the age relatedness of it and the being told to slow down, no exercise, which in previous experience of stuff going wrong with you rarely helps.

So I am I guess looking for 2nd opinions and scouring t'internet. I shall still go out if it's light, but windy day stuff is clearly beyond me for a while and what caused the problem in the first place, or go back to crewed boats, where the humping and windy stuff is easier and shared.

At a recent eye test I was told I am at quite high risk of the exact same thing (that and/or cataracts!) and must always wear either dark/tinted lenses or photochromatic lenses (Transitions basically)

Fun hey.

Sorry to hear that Grumpf, hope it fixes itself.  Sailing's damaged my eyes too, but not so dramatically.

Really sorry to hear that, Graeme. I hope you'll get better soon.

Mind you, staring at a computer screen with a slight smile, waiting for forum trolls to take the bait is DEFINITELY bad for the eyes Wink

Take care xxx

Why thank you BNS(am I forgiven now?) and yes the first thing I asked was how the computer would effect it and to my surprise he said not at all. ( I do spend an inordinate amount of time in front of one with spreadsheets and business software, hence the diversion from boredom that forums provide).

However, I am thinking of getting a black eye patch anyway to maximise sympathy, attention seeker that I clearly am...

Three months appears to be the sentence, so not the total end of the earth, except I have to worry about the other eye presumably going the same way.

You'll need a skull and crossbones on the 100 spinnaker to go with the eye patch. The wooden leg should fit in nicely...
