It seems that Jack Holt Ltd went toes up in February, and has been bought out by Holt Marine Ltd, a company which appears to feature much of the same management!

I don't pretend to understand this finance lark, but I do wonder who loses...

Often all of us that loses, or rather us as represented by by HM Revenue and Customs- plus other smaller creditors.

They were owed a fortune by those kind folk at Laser apparently, you're
a bit behind with this news, it got reported in the Rumours thread
before the dinghy show.

They are or were also suffering from the fall out with Allen Bros who
have now gone UDI following Holts brief but catastrophic affair with
Brazillian production (why Brazil I wonder, there are better sources of
quality manufacturing).

Anyway, my take on it, if ever an example of how not to do it exists
that's one of them, and if it were me I'd do my utmost to reform the
Holt-Allen alliance, someone should buy both outfits, knock their heads
together and do something about their image, neither of which is great
to the johnny come lately eye compared to the Harken, Ronstans of this
world.

In reality this country leads the world at the sharp end of competitive
sailing, conditions have never been better for a local manufacturer to
export, what a shame the business part of it is mired in its fifties
attitude, it makes you weep to watch it.

Jim,

Similar thing happens in my industry. We are quoting very competitively to win jobs, only to lose out to cowboy companies coming in at about 30-40% less than us (and we are only just covering costs). These companies tend to stick around for a couple of months, then go belly up. The next monday they are operating under a new (very similar) name with same management.

I dont understand how this can be legal, how noone seems to get in trouble for it. It is killing the reputable companies. Suppliers still deal with them even though they know the background too. Things arent looking rosy in our sector currently!

The latest Allen fittings (cleats, blocks) work as well as Harken in my experience. Getting away from Holt seems to have rejeuvenated them.

That said, Holt did supply a lot of handy 'cooking' parts and I'd hate to lose them. Hopefully they've learnt not to export their production unwisely and will now get back on track.

Hi all

I've had to delete the last three posts made as they were libelous.

Best Regards, Mark

In my experience, Laser are inept. Can't see how that is Libelous.

If (Big If) Laser go bust its surely true that backup will be at best diminished, at worst non-existent. How can stating the obvious be libelous?

Or is it just is anything that's critical of one of your major advertisers that's libelous?

Hi Keith

Now that you have qualified the statement it is not libelous.

Best Regards, Mark

Nonsense!

I don't recall how many times companies selling Lasers have gone bust in the past: I 'm pretty sure its more than once, but it has yet to affect backup, so I disagree that its obvious that it will.

Fundamentally selling the most popular racing class in the world and parts for them has to have the potential to be a worthwhile business, so even if they were to go toes up like Performance Sailcraft did and maybe others, there would always be someone to step in the breach, buy up the remains and carry on.

If I were a Laser sailor I wouldn't lose a moment's sleep worrying about what might happen *if* they were to go bust. I suppose I might consider making sure everything I ordered from them was on credit card and properly documented to get the protection, but apart from that I doubt the financial status of Laser will make any difference at all to the average man-in-the-dinghy-park.
