I enjoy stuff like medway maniacs race reports and redbacks adventures,
even that young pain in the neck learning to windsurf who's name
escapes me brings the occasional grin.

JimC and his obvious mine of technical info makes up for his imo slightly
anal nature and can be a valuable resource and much as I might have
maligned them for their absurd monica, I read anything and everything
about Cherub and other skiffy antics with intrigue.

I soak up anything technical about boat settings regardless of the class
and wonder wether to apply it .C249 and his antipodean take on things
Chew my RS and his enthusiam for NS14, I want an indepth on wing
wangs Canadian adventures and I've even made my eyes bleed watching
Turnturtles slowmo race vid, in fact I lap up anything where enthusiasm
clearly matches my own..

So how about y'all what's your favorite forum read?

Generally some of the techy stuff regardless of the class.  I enjoy absorbing it and then trying to determine who knows what they are talking about.

Pictures are always good.

Was enjoying your Alto tales - still waiting for the next update.  I'm looking forward to seeing one close up at the boat show.............not that I would change codes and go for a monohull just yet!

I like the technical stuff like the Jeffers thread about the pros and cons of Laser kickers (Holt vs Harken) - Clicky
.......it's genuinely useful to compare other people's experiences especially when it involves spending your hard earned cash.

I love some of the video clips, the photos and the experiences (positive or negative) of people's own craft....your Alto, TT's Musto/Phantom etc.

I like the debates on the 'Rules of Sailing'.........however I've become convinced that whatever somebody says on such a thread seems to be countered by somebody else quoting a different interpretation of that rule or invokes a different rule  Confused

I love hearing about new products, peoples technical issues, I LOVED the Alto thread.  What i really like which this forum lacks are online blogs on peoples builds, i loved following Jims Canoe blog.

I also like a bit of banter.

The bits i dont like are the bull sh*ters that float around.

Despite having had run ins with GRF in the past I do appreciate some of his contributions. Some are just downright rude and offensive (which was why he got banned) and some are very insightful and useful.

As much as I hate to admit it I am please to see him back, I just hope he doesn't offend too many people and get himself banned again!

Well surprising though it may seem GRF doesn't actually set out to be
rude
and offensive, not at least in any deliberate or malicious manner, nor I
suspect does anyone else in reality.

He has been around the 'post regatta bar banter sailing club' circuit for
more years than he cares to remember and past experiences have always
been a more robust resistance to ribbing and leg pulling than appears to
be present here.

Forums and created forum personas should generally match the content
of the forum group, let's say he's had two failed attempts at matching
that
persona although he suspects a degree of conspiracy behind the last
'banning'

Surely if someone, anyone, finds a post particularly offensive then the
first
course of action should be to highlight the particular issue? On topic,
there are a lot of folk who enjoy mild controversy, and say what you like
those controversial threads are the busiest by far and this is by far the
best medium for interactive debate.

It is surely not adult in any way to simply complain in the background
without making your particular views clear and why, all that does is
reduce the 'forum' to a particularly narrow interest group of characters.

Nor is it commercially advantageous to the interests of Y&Y that banned
members or members that disagree with 'banning' cancelling
subscriptions to the mag which I'm now aware happens and has
happened
with more frequency than I would have thought was good for a
commercial operation.

So simply put if GRF or anyone else for that matter pisses you off, why
not
PM them and tell him that rather than whining to hard pressed
moderators
who may have other stresses. You might even find the apology quicker
and more sincere than you could have previously imagined.

The typed word contains no expression, no wry grin, no cheeky wink, no
deadpan delivery nor any other human means of conveying that tongue in
cheek is the order of the day. Do you really think GRF hates Cat sailors or
Cherub sailors in real life? It is an absurdity, no individual can be defined
by what they sail, it's a joke has always been a joke between sailing
classes.. GP14 sailors used to be the butt of it back in the day.

As for banning, that's absurd as well, you can have as many identities as
you can create email addresses..

Forums are or should be a fun and informative media amongst like
minded people, they can get destroyed by childish drivel txt spk foul and
abusive language, but then that should be self policed by the forum
group
and moderation used only as a very last resort if the particular individual
refuses to cease and desist imho.

From GRF:

"The typed word contains no expression, no wry grin, no cheeky wink, no
deadpan delivery nor any other human means of conveying that tongue in
cheek is the order of the day. Do you really think GRF hates Cat sailors or
Cherub sailors in real life? It is an absurdity, no individual can be defined

Very true GRF!  I was disappointed when you were expelled, for the very reasons stated by others on this thread. I appear to clearly see the humour in your comments quite clearly where others become defensive and agitated.

Humour keeps us sane(ish), keep up the good work!

Oh yeah, what about the forum? Most of the dinghy stuff really, still find the rules threads as impenetrable as the rules themselves tho. I enjoy the "which boat for me" threads which always degenerate into completely biased advice. I do find the constant carping on about the shortcomings of rotomoulded boats very dreary and predictable - if they get people sailing then what is wrong with them?

Steve

The problem with an electronic forum is that people cannot read the body language and facial expressions. So you might be there chuckling away to yourself saying things in jest but they cannot see that, all they see are the words which they have to interpret. Much harder as I am sure you can agree.

This is why you have the 'dreaded' smileys so you can give a hint of what you are feeling at the time or writing....
