I feel I have to remark about this boat.

It was after all it's owner Andrew (The slightly smarter part of Dumb &
Dumberer I oft refer to)that introduced me to the potential of the new
Alto, albeit a year ago now after he bought then broke (hence the D&D
title) my original purple 3000.

But anyway enough rambling, they have the most sorted 3000 I've ever
seen, and over this recent windy period they have won race after race in
it, both over the water and on handicap on sunday.

I'm hoping this might prompt the shy boy to post some more pics of it,
I'm trying to persuade the Alto folk to rig their spinnaker in similar
fashion, using a spinlock on the hoist is a bit bright for someone with the
nickname "dumb".

Watching them physically lift the boat on and off the water with ease,
then getting creamed by them on a reach, you can't help wondering if
you've made progress in boat choice since those heady days when the
Breadknife said "Give up trying to sail that beast, buy something sensible
and teach your daughter to sail" and the Laser 3000 was my first re-
assuring steps into the world of competitive dinghy racing.

But the difference between Purple and the V3000 is staggering, so
another one to consider if your all up crew weight doesn't exceed 130
kilos I'd say at a guess. It was interesting watching the two boats in a
celebrity death match on Sunday, D&D and Jo (The crew battering SI lady
and her fiance Duncan) vying for over the water line honours, I'm not
even sure which finshed first it was that close.

But if ever a boat makeover has transformed it, Vandercraft have worked
some magic and Andrew has done a superb job of fitting it out, maybe
he'll illuminate us in dinghyspeak as to what all the bits are and why he
did it.

We have four of them at Willsonians now and i aggree... its moved to the top of the of handicap bandits list now.

But then if you add a fair bit of sail and take 30kgs out of the hull of any boat it will go a lot quicker!

I've always rated it since I first saw a Vandacraft one at the dinghy show a couple of years ago.

In my view the vest of the bunch by some way.

Are you saying the old Laser 3000 and the new Vandercraft 3000 were battling it out on the water? Totally plausible in light airs, but it hardly makes the V a PY bandit, does it?

Yes, the V is appreciably quicker to plane, but dinghies spend most of their time going upwind, not planing. Add that time to the light winds time and the overall performance is not so dramatically different. For the interval that the V is quicker, though, it is dramatically quick (which is what everybody notices), and great fun

It was more a case of the V3000 v RS500

They were making quite a few mistakes in the 500 including a quick swim

No I'm saying the Vandercraft, plus the combination of whatever rags
makes the V3000 an entire other ball game.

We have four or five old style 3000's, they never feature anywhere near
the front of our fleet, regardless who sails them, myself included..

Now Dumb & Dumberer have not had any road to damascus life changing
tactical brain implant experience since they last raced.

Yet suddenly strong wind to fairly light they're now up there winning,
totally pasting the Muppets in a strong wind and annoying us in light to
medium and taking on the RS500.

You could put Ainslie at the helm of a Laser 3000 with a dwarf as crew,
he wouldn't even get close.

What you V3000 fans need to know, is exactly what the boys done did to
pimp their ride..

Fit after burners or twin turbos?

We sail the Scout groups 3K when its windy, seriously windy. Only when we
can plane upwind. We had 19.7 knots out of our knakerd 3K with
aftermarket Dacron sails the other day with a 19.1 10 second average. They
kice arse in a blow and I really want to sail the new one!
