My friend and I, are looking to break free from our boaring old Lasers and move to something a little more exiting. We're both 16 years old, I weigh about 70kg's and I'm 170cm tall. My crew is roughly the same. I currently sail my laser at squad level, but have sailed plenty of other boats (RS 400, Laser 4000 ect.) However i only have limited trapezing experience. My crew is great out on the wire, having crewed a 4000 for a number of years. we will be sailing the boat on coastal waters. From the sale of our lasers, I dont think money will be much of a problem, we should have at least 6000 between us. We live in scotland, so there's not really much of an 800 fleet. However the scottish skiff series, should keep us entertained. Is the 800 the right boat for us? I know somebody is gona say Cherub, but I don't want to spend the rest of my life in the garage repairing it! Other suggestions and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Ken,
The 800 would be a great boat for you and your crew. It shouldnt take too long to get the knack of trapezing, and I think there are a few on the scottish skiff cicuit, so some competition. |

You could both get 600's like me and my brother did and it will soon become very competative but most importantly a good laugh. Otherwise a 800 would be a good choice, if your interested my friend is selling his (number 1001) for £4,500 with a unused main still wrapped and plenty of spares! PM me if your interested. Mark. |

if you told us your reasons for choosing an rs800 over other boats then we might be able to help a bit more. what was your criteria for choosing boats? (this will allow us to suggest other possibilities) doublehanded options, rs800, laser5000, 49er(?) rs500(?) how about a 29er? great youth scene, im your weight and helm and it didnt affect our performance much.... singlehander options, rs600, rs300, rs700 (if money allows), blaze (?) |

Thanks for the response guys. We do enjoy sailing together, so I think a doublehander is a must. Reasons for choosing 800 over others: I like the idea of having a dual trapeze boat. We're after a real challenge, so boats like the 4000, and the 500 seem a bit tame. We had considered the 29er, we're maybe a bit on the heavy side? I think the performance of the boat is a bit more important to us than the racing. which is why we had ruled out 500 and 29er ect. The 5000: Doesn't look as cool as the 800, don't like the idea of bag hoisting/dropping. Are we not a bit light to consider a 49er? I'd also put the 5000 in the too light catagory? The 800 offers weight equalisation, which i think would be a major advantage to us. If you asked me to pick between an RS and a Laser, I think i'd go RS every time: they seem much better layed out, more well built (anyone else agree?). Is this the same case between the 5000 and the 800? The reason I started this topic: Are we a bit out of our depth with and 800? How tricky is it to sail? Are there any better boats we could pick? Thanks,
|

I don't think you will be out of your depth, you can always not trapeze helm for abit then move out, you are used to helming so it is only the trapeze bit you need to learn.
I say go for it, best purchase you will make for a while |

I crewed one a couple of years ago and i've recently bought one of which I
helm and I absolutely love the boat. I'm fairly confident you won't have much issue handling the boat. Lets face it, you know what you're doing in a boat so go for it! |

between the two of you your about the right weight for a 29er, just you could do with being 5kg less and your crew 5kg more. however, the weight wont affect you. i would suspect the 29er may be more 'twitchy' than the 800 (not sailed a 800 but the 29er has a less stable hull and is fully battened. RE the 4000 and 500 being too tame, i totally agree. they are both great boats but dont give quite the adrenaline rush us 'youfs' need yes you would be light for the laser5000 but you will probably put on weight over the next year or two. my only reason for suggesting this was that it was a very cheap twin wire boat which you could sail together for a while to make sure you enjoy that type of boat. however you seem confident you want to so in this instance i would say an 800 looks a great buy. from what i can gather they are a relatively easy boat to sail (considering the type). keep us updated on what you decide and if your going to look at one then try posting up here for advice on what to look for, there are 3 or 4 rs800 sailors on here who im sure would be happy to help (possibly even look at the boat with you for a pint or two....). above all, enjoy |

I'd go for the 800 over a 29er. I sailed a 29er on the SSR circuit for a year and as much as i loved it, i usually wished i was in something a bit nippier. Me and my bro are about the same size as you two, perhaps slightly taller, but we found the 29er a bit dull under a force 4 without the competition of boats of the same speed. You shouldn't find it too hard difficult, the 800 is very forgiving.
See you on the SSR circuit sometime, i'll be in the beaten up looking Musto. |
