..for a while. There needs to be a "peoples" 18 foot skiff. An 18 for club racing, regular open meetings and accessible to the average sailor. 18 feet is a bit long for your average boat park, as is a fixed bowsprit. I think there needs to be a 3 wire skiff for Mr Joe Bloggs (aka me) who feels he is missing out on such exciting sailing.

So hears what I'm thinking. Light weight, 16 feet long, 10 beam (with racks obviously. Same width as a b14, so boat park friendly), long but retractable bow sprit, 3 wires, masthead kite and lots of lovely rag.

Like a 16 foot skiff, but wider, with more sail and an extra wire. In essence a smaller, more average Joe friendly 18.

Thoughts?

No. If there was such a boat available, would you not seriously consider it if you were looking at buying a new boat? I know I would, and I know other people who would.

By what you are saying it would probably be harder to sail than an 18, they are pretty stable boats, a lightweight 16ft boat with 3 wires probably wont be!

What, like light weight twin wire skiffs, such as cherubs? At 16 feet long and with a fairly large rig, you can only make it so light. It would have to be robust enough to take a beating, but not as robust as say a 5000! Robustness= more weight but there is a balance.

I have always quite fancied something along the line of a more modern National 18, I  am not sure that a 14ft light weight, over canvased, 3 man skiff is ever going to catch on enough to be described as a "people's" boat. Wouldn't a 3 person dinghy that allowed a wider range of sizes/ages/ablities be more popular.
Thinking along the lines of something that I could sail with my father 50 ish and a friend.

Surely a 16ft boat with a big enough rig for the triple wiring would be a bit prone to nosediving.

Well a ten foot beam with three strings is a lot of righting moment (not quite as much as an eighteen). And this suggests a large rig (larger than a 16ft skiff for example). So it's either going to stick out either end or go high, giving it more torque over the bow for the nosediving (sort of thing).
It all makes perfect sense (unless I try to write it down)

No Ross, I was wrong.  It really is a great idea.

NOT.
