Having sailed sat and sun this week took my suunto t6 heart rate monitor with me on the RS700. On race one I reached 173 bpm at age 47 that’s near max hartrate for me.

After downloading the data to the training program set up for a 7 hours a week training person, me, It gave me an  overtraining reading  after one hour, without the two races left to go that day.  To get the program out of over training I had to set it at athlete? I thought sailing would be low on hart rate as I feel normal / not hard work.

I found this sailing the laser1 in a blow too.thats hard work

In the gym I find it very hard work to get to 160 bpm and very hard and out of breath.

I am starting to get that gym look since sailing the RS700, arms like lead today

As with weight

I normally lose 1 lbs asleep overnight, but after sailing on a windy day I lose 3 lbs overnight and feel hot all night?

On a windy weekend I can lose 5 lbs between fri and mon. Which I regain 4 lbs over the next few days. I drink lots of water afloat and fuel up before sailing.

You can sit still and have a high heartrate. Sat any exams lately? Had a job interview? Adrenalin is pouring into your bloodstream and one effect is a high heartrate. Same for sailing. Helming a keelboat on a startline with 30-40 other boats, I may not be working physically hard but my heart is pumping alright.

Weight loss will be dehydration and glycogen depletion, which also causes dehydration. OK so you are drinking and eating. Eat and drink more.

At what stage of the race are you hitting 170bpm?

Just some thoughts -

1) pumping down the kite when you have trawled it will increase your heart rate!

2) feeling hot all night could be an 'age' thing....or too much viagra! (And you've got enough kids anyway, so this needs sorting!!!)

3) would suggest that you should have drunk approx 1 litre of fluid (isotonic etc) per race on Sun to stay hydrated.

4) lastly...any chance of slowing down on the first beat?!

Well done at the w/end.  i had a good sail today - sunshine and f4.

I hit 173 bmp heart rate 3 times on that race but suunto t6 has no gps, so i think it was went gaz went past me in his IC leaving me for dead on that reach, then when he put his foot down on the beat leaving me in his exhaust . ic rule ok,go gaz go

iv found in the past with the laser 1 that sailing in a blow training hard is always a lower heart rate than racing, could not pinpoint why,may be you donot feel pain on a good race day?

im going to take my forerunner 305 with me next time. its like the fortrek but has a heart belt as well. ill be able to see heart rate as i go around the course on the computer later.

on sunday  HR went between 160 and 130 and got a highly inproving result on the epoc training effect. most of the time spent in the moderate or hard training zone for first race, then wind dropped off staying at 140- 120 for next 3 hours then went in well cream cracked.

I will take more fluid with me next time but what  goes in must come out and it hard work going in between races and less fun as we had 4 mini races between race 2 and 3 ,thee RS700 and one ic.

Couple of reasons for your higher rate when sailing

1, Cannot breath when you want to; when trianing you breath regularly and when you want to.  Cannot breath with the race track spread over your face

2, Not breathing properly - I've found at thimes when working hard I sometimes forget to breath properly - usually thinking, "Oh poo, the second batten is in the water, I wonder if the T foils will hold...."

3, Too hot or Too cold ?

no idea ow heart rate thingies work so this is just a geuss but could it be like a GPS that records "spikes" e.g the RS 300 that hit 23 knots or whatever it was?
600 732, will call it Sticks and Stones when i get round to it.
Also International 14, 1318

Might just be because you worry about your heart rate that it goes up so much!

No seriously,if weighing myself before and after sleep on windy days and quiet days, plus wearing electonic devices to check if I'm alive properly could get me to sail a 700, I'd jump on that scale and reach for the wires!

As for suggesting adrenalin highs and forgetting to breathe, I've been there (in my own small way, nothing sporty) with the Contender!

Being on rack position 5 on the rs700 with baby bars means you get wet if you make a mistake. On rack position 3 I could stay dry by climbing up the inside of the boat quickly and going between racks no baby bars. I am trying to lose weight to get on position 6 so that I can go between the racks after a mistake as they are wider apart.

The Main point of the sunnto t6 for me is to stop overtraining,

I hate the gym and have now found out that sailing is a great way to keep fit and lose weight without going to the gym. If you look my heart rate on a laser 1 race it looks like interval training. 160-140 bpm upwind then a 120-100 bpm downwind.

I sail for 5 hrs at a time, now by using technology I now know i am overtraining.

Its like gps just for fun, but it could help me get fit to sail for four days at lake garda without get ill.

I wish I had my t6 on at the masters at swanage a few years ago in a laser 1, two days of force 6 with big waves, then a three hours drive home, legs like lead and that cluch in a traffic jam.

sample below saling laser 1
