Afternoon folks... 1st post here, but been lurking for a while and would to take your opinions...

37 yr old man, 13.5 stone (hoping to reduce this tho *ahem*) and 5' 8" tall.  Sailing since I could walk, and instructor for ober 15 yrs. Raced as helm over the years in Ents, Laser, L2, Moth (Mag 5), RS400 before going into cats with Shearwater then Spitfire.

I've always prefered 2-man boats but have finally realised that due to my job (RAF Aircrew) I'll only be letting my crew down on a regular basis while going off to sandy places to get shot at! lol.  Also due to the job, I cant commit to completing a club series, so want a boat that inspires me enough to make me want to just sail it... not just racing.

I've got access through work to RS400s, L2000s, Lasers and a Dart 16 for free, but I just cant get excited by Lasrs as I've always hated them with a passion (don't we all - apart from the class racing!).

At Oxford there's a good fleet of Lasers (bleeuuaagghh), a good fleet of  Solos (nice boat - too slow for me tho), a couple of Contenders (hmmm, possible but not fun in lighter airs) and 1 or 2 Canoes (HMMM!)

My req's would be single-handed, fast, still interesting to sail in the lighter stuff, and if poss having others to sail against when I did race.  And Cheap. Very cheap, as I have a mortage company to suport and 2 kids that soak up money quicker than Gazza can down a pint!

I thought about a Unicorn, but there'd be no 1-on-1 racing, an older Moth - but I'd never compete in a handicap fleet, and if I did manage to squirrel away some funds in the longer term, I'd still be too heavy to get the bugger foiling!  RS600.... I raced 1 half a dozen times last year and it was good, but I never fell in love with it - and 1200 pounds upwards is more than I can afford really.  Which leave the Canoe.... always wanted one since I was about 8 (nearly won one on Ebay the other night, but they've added a security page that meant I ran out of time to bid! AAARRGGHH!!)

So... do you agree the the Canoe is the obvious choice?

If so, do you know of an old nail of a Canoe at your clubs in need of some love?  Being a sentimental old git, I'd love to breath life into a forgoten old boat, and have got the facilities at work to do so.

Cheers, Jon

On the side of the 600 there is a cracking fleet at oxford.. I think there were 13 or 14 boats a while back? mines since gone but its still an impressive number...
Unfortunately TT is right though... you would have to bump up your budget even for an old boat these days since they seem to have poped out of their slump.

Dont get the chance to munch our way across the Atlantic these days... most trips head east (boo!) and it's amazing how much weight you lose (and how rapidly) on spotting a SAM!

You'd pick up a Contender for the money you're talking. Although don't try to sell me that poor airman story. Subsidised accomodation, free clothing, flying pay, extra money for serving anywhere sandy, nowhere to spend it when serving anywhere sandy, etc.

Yes... a Contenter is the other main, err... contender in my view, but I've got a mate that races one on the circuit and I've seen the misery on his face when there's not enough to get out on the wire.

And yep, nowhere to spend the dosh out in the desert.... shame the wife and kids aren't there too!

Your mate wouldn't be Ed would he? I believe he has got a nice new boat and RAF logos on his sail.

That'll be the one!

Nice guy... only raced against him a few times at RAF events (and got well and truly leathered together! )
