Last week-end we have seen a very strange dinghy on our lake in the Netherlands:
It looks somewhat like a B14 featuring only a huge jib with the mast standing far aft in the cockpit. It had racks and people sailing close reported that it accelerated very fast in gusts => very lightweight? The jib showed a big "R" if that helps.

It was launched at a British Sailing Club, so does anyone know this type?

Thank you!

I don't know of an R from the UK and in any case that would not have been a jib only rig! ISTR seeing something like that many years ago at a combined Moth/Cherub nationals.

I don't have a lot of confidence in the usefullness of the jib only format. I think it comes from muddled thinking:- people thinking, "Oh a mast does horrible things to the flow on the front of the sail, lets do without it", but without appreciating the diffficulties of a knife leading edge and the aerodynamic drawbacks of a triangular sail. Solving one problem and creating 10 others...

like this?

a big jib and a twin mast

I think Paul Elstrom did a 'Trapez' dinghy something like this in the 60's, ( but better ).
Only one trapeze wire, you just stay hooked on and go behind the mast.

Sorry, it had no twin mast, in fact the mast was bent forward (so the other way as you usually do on Skiffs) although I am not sure if it was intended like this by the designer Smile

The mast is standing pretty upright and way higher compared to the hull length.

The jib was some yellow 'see trough' Mylar whatever...

And it has racks that look like the strange things they use on Hobie Tigers.

Almost certainly a Radius, which was at boat shows at least as early as '93.

The boat was designed and built in the Netherlands.

I imagine it works OK once you've sheeted in fully on the beat, but is probably a bit odd off the wind.

The elvstrom trapez was a 'normal' dinghy

but the Radius is what I was thinking of.... and I'm sure it was about in the 70's.
