I've switched to using my old vest type aid (like a waistcoat but made out of strips filled with litttle plastic bubbles). Fantastic, so much freedom of movement, so light and so easy to get back up onto the centreboard when capsised. In other words - so much safer! They don't make them anymore but I'm leaving my closed cell foam high cut jobby at home. I can't see over it to see if my hook is snagged, I can't get it up over the edge of my centreboard when I've capsised and anyway it rides up under my ears and nose when I'm in the water. When will they stop measuring the effectiveness of a bouyancy aid by its bouyancy instead of its practicality. Will somebody please make a modern version with a large back panel of closed cell foam that goes down to the waist and just a small thin layer at the front so as not to be bulky? I know we've been here before but I can't find it in the forum. |

The issue with a large back panel and small thin panel at the front is one of safety as it will without doubt cause you to float face down. Not ideal if you are unconscious!

But bouyancy aids are just that they help you float. If you want to float face up you need a life jacket which by design will bring you up face up.
Persoanlly I use a high cut jobby from our French friends at Decathlon, give me unrivalled movement (I had a Gul Garda before) and it was very wallet friendly. Paul |

No buoyancy aid will keep your face out of the water when unconscious. You need a full lifejacket for that. |

If you are wearing a buoyancy aid and you feel your face being shoved towards the water, its probably your crew! Back to the main point. Redback, I totally agree with you. I have a crewsaver pro gybe job. Great buoyancy aid, apart from when you have climb onto the daggerboard or pull yourself into the boat. This made worse because as I am a girl it rides up more. I have seen girly buoyancys about but do they make any differance? Edited by Fans1024 |

Im living in hope that someone will come out with a legal impact vest style bouyancy aid. Some of the currently available ones dont fall far short of the 50N required and are so slim they can practically be worn as another layer instead of something bulky over the top

That is my point a bouyancy aid is just that it will help you float to the surface. They are not designed to bring you up face first with your face out the water. This used to be taught as part of the RYA NDSC so you knew the difference and the associated risks of using a bouyancy aid as opposed to a life jacket.
As I am sure most people would agree wering a full life jacket on a dinghy (not the inflate when hit water type) is not really practical. Paul |

Jim, what i meant was that more bouyancey in the back of the jacket will encourage you floating face down, i know that bouyancy aids are not meant to make you float face up
