The laser hull is both a bit wider and a fair amount longer

There are three different rigs available for the laser to allow for the largerest range in weight of people to sail them: 4.7, radial and standard.

A laser is a fair bit quicker and a laser radial is probably slightly quicker when the breeze gets up

I think a slightly fairer comment would be 'the laser has a bigger following and more open meets and training events' Your previous comment rather belittles the members of the Byte class committee (unpaid) who are putting a lot of effort into managing the class transition between builders at the same time as organising next years Euro-cup and the 2008 worlds. There is plent of actvity in the Byte class just at a smaller level.
ps. And its a nicer boat to sail than the Radial and 4.7 who are the equivilents in the laser range Edited by tack'ho |

I was certainly not belittling the Byte class assocation, I didn't even mention them! I just said that the Laser class has an extremely active class association which is very true (the majoirty of committee is also unpaid).
Also the standard of Laser sailing is far higher at the top end... not everyone will see this as a plus point!

Sorry, should have read 'could be seen to belittle......' There's no dispute that the laser class is more active, but i would suggest that the % of active CII sailors ie. those making the opens/inlands, in paticular is quite high and rising. We're just on a smaller scale. Although the Byte is big in Canada and Singapore. You never know Jon it it keeps growing they may be some work in to for you!! |
