Id be very interested on hearing an updated veiw on whats going on...
my theory (or hope) is that they should have made it clearer by now as
to whats going on... the majority of sailors will still be using
traditional hooks come january so there will either have to be a longer
'adjustment' period or (as im hoping) it will turn out that actualy it
was all a big panic about nothing and it will only be the 'shackle'
style hooks that are banned.
I took a gamble last month and bought a magic marine skiff harness, it does not have a QRH, and without sending it back to the factory I dont think one could be fitted. If it comes to it does anyone know if a QHR could be retro-fitted? |

There are various submissions to be heard at the ISAF conferenmce in November, which one wins will decide what happens, but I think the smart money is that the rule will be deferred (much to the disappointment of harness makers). |

There are proposals to either delete 40.2 from the RRS or to delay its implementation before the ISAF annual meeting in November. I think you can safely assume that the rule will not come into effect in January 06. It might come into effect in the future but I expect that it will be amended if it does. There is talk of an ISO standard being developed - I would expect that any rule in the future was tied in to compliance with a standard such as that.

That should hold it up for a good while and turn a few forests into paper. Easiest solution would be to just stick a CE mark on the existing designs, that'll make them safe. Seems to work for everything else. Sorry, just in a bad mood this morning! Mike |

The Racing Rules Committee proposed a change to submission 147 on quick release harnesses, which will now see their mandatory introduction delayed until 2009. Committee Chairman David TILLETT (AUS) explained the change saying, 'It’s important that sailors recognize the safety issues here and it’s just as important to ensure that the right equipment is in place and an appropriate standard developed.' |

UPDATE * Amendment to the Racing Rules of Sailing 2005-2008 The Change is: 40.2 A trapeze or hiking harness shall have a device that can quickly release the competitor from the boat at any time while in use. Note: This rule takes effect on 1 January 2009. This change to the note under Rule 40.2 will apply immediately and effectively means that rule 40.2 will not take effect before the new edition of the Racing Rules of Sailing (2009-2012) will be published. The Racing Rules of Sailing are available on the ISAF website http://www.sailing.org -- from the Irish Sailing Association newsletter |
