Mumm 30 World's Day 2

by Laura Jelmeni on 12 Nov 2000
The second day of the Mumm 30 World Championship started under cloudy skies
at 10:40 a.m. A four leg course with a southeasterly breeze was signaled,
with 1.75 mile beats. Half way up the beat the sun broke through and the
cloud cover cleared for another picture perfect day. Driving conditions
were difficult in the light 8-10 knots of breeze and lumpy seas. Several of
the boats on the left hand side of the course were overstood, making for a
congested mark rounding. The breeze gradually filled to 10-12 knots, with
lots of shifts to challenge the tacticians.
'Mirage' owned by American Tim McCarron called the shifts on the second
beat and worked into a sizable lead by the weather mark, which was
unchallenged to the finish. Ed Collins 's 'USA 48' also made big gains on
that leg, moving into second, followed by 'Maximumm Dread' and the Italian
team on Vincenzo Onorato's 'Mascalzone Latino'
Race 4 was the same course, with 2 mile legs set in the fresher breeze,
which was up to 12-16 knots. It was a shifty breeze and big gains and
losses were made on each leg. The first three mark roundings had three
different leaders.
Phil Garland's 'Trouble' took the lead on the second beat on the next beat
which he held for the remainder of the race. The wind dropped off in the
third leg. 'USA 48' moved up 8 places through the race to take second,
followed by Mascalzone Latino in third.
The final race of the day was set with a course of 160 degrees, with four 2
mile legs. The wind speed and waves decreased as the day progressed.
Onorato's 'Mascalzone Latino' gained a convincing lead by the leeward mark
and went unchallenged for the rest of the race. His combined scores of 4,
3, 1 moved him into third place for the regatta. He attributed his success
to prayers to the Italian weather gods for these
conditions, which he excelled in, and said his prayers were answered. Mike
Dressell on 'USA 65' sailed a consistent day to hold onto second overall.
Two seconds and an 11th place were enough to catapult 'USA 48' into the
lead. Ed Collins said their strategy was to start conservatively mid-line
'to be safe' and credited co-owner Barry Allardice's expertise timing the
shifts to their success. Race day 1 leader dropped into fourth after
mid-fleet finishes in the 4th and 5th races.
Racing continues tomorrow with two races planned.
