Meet Code One’s co-skipper, Skip Novak

by The race Media on 3 Nov 2000
Skip Novak, 48, an American domiciled in Europe, is known first and foremost
for taking part in four Whitbreads between 1977 and 1989. To combine his love
of the open sea with his passion for climbing (he has made many ascents all
over the world), he has spent nearly ten seasons in the Antarctic aboard his
ship Pelagic, built in 1987. Among the many pictures that resulted from these
expeditions were two reports which received world coverage in 1993 and 1996.
As well as writing for the Daily Telegraph and many sailing magazines, he has
written a number of books including “Fazisi – The Joint Venture” which received
the British prize for Best Sports Book. Since his return to top-level ocean racing
three years ago, he has covered many miles and broken records aboard
Explorer with Bruno Peyron, whose acquaintance he first made on the upturned
hull of DRUM! As co-skipper of Code 1 with Loïck Peyron, Skip Novak will
bring to the crew his 300 000 miles of sailing experience including 23 000 aboard
giant multihulls.

Prizes:

1977 : 2nd in the Whitbread aboard Kings Legend (navigator).

1979 : winner of the Sydney Hobart aboard Bumble Bee III (crewman)

1983 : winner of the Maxi circuit (crewman).

1985 / 86 : skipper of DRUM, third in the Whitbread.

1987 / 1997 : 10 seasons in the Antarctic aboard Pelagic.

1989 : skipper and project manager of Fazisi, the first Russian boat
to compete in the Whitbread.

1997 : Transpac Race record aboard Explorer (navigator).

1998 : Yokohama – San Francisco record aboard Explorer (Co-skipper).

1999 : New York / Lizard Point record attempt aboard Explorer.
