P&O Nedloyd provide major boost to Youth Sailing

by Megan Seton on 1 Mar 2001
Shipping giant P&O Nedlloyd have increased their support of sailing with the
recent announcement that they will ship competitors’ boats free of charge to
the 2002 Australian Youth Championship (AYC) in Perth and the 2003 AYC in
South Australia. In 2002, the event will be held at Royal Freshwater Bay
Yacht Club from 10-14 January next year.

A strong supporter of sailing for several years now, P&O Nedlloyd began
shipping boats for Australia’s aspiring Olympians in 1997. This agreement
was then extended to benefit not only Olympic athletes, but also members of
affiliated class associations wishing to compete at World and recognised
International championships.

“We welcome P&O Nedlloyd’s valuable assistance with this event,” said
Australian Yachting Federation CEO Phil Jones. “In holding the Australian
Youth Championship it is our intention to visit as many states and
territories of Australia as possible. However, cost is always a major
factor in youth sailing, and shipping boats around the country is not cheap,
so by offering this shipping deal to competitors, we hope to be able to
attract the strongest competition possible.”

With the timing of the AYC as it is, it will also be possible for youth
sailors in the Laser and 420 classes to attend their class national
championship either just prior to, or just after the youth event.

Final details are currently being ascertained; however, the intention is to
keep costs to a minimum. Whilst the shipping itself will be free, there may
be some cost involved in getting boats to and from the dock. Full details
will be available from the AYF website or your state or territory yachting
association.

All countries will be allocated a minimum of three entries The 29er Class has not restricted entries for the World or European Championships in the past but due to the expected popularity of the Worlds in 2026 in Kiel we feel it is necessary to do an Entry Allocation. This is very difficult to do fairly.
