War Games wins IRC division - Adelaide to Port Lincoln race

by Peter Campbell on 5 Mar 2001
Adelaide yachtsman David Urry sailed an outstanding race in his Farr 40 One Design, War Games, to win the IRC Division of the 51st Quin's Blue Water Classic ocean race from Adelaide to Port Lincoln over the weekend.

War Games finished a close third across the line, astern of Ausmaid (Kevan Pearce) and Prime Example (Graham Williams) in the 96 boat fleet, to win on IRC corrected time from Chris Tillett's Mumm 30, On the Edge.

Third place went to 38 Degrees South, the Melbourne-based Sydney 38 chartered by a group of Port Lincoln Yacht Club members and skippered by David Buckland.

Ausmaid, winner of the 2000 Telstra Sydney to Hobart, took line honours but could not hold her time in either the IRC Division or in Racing Division 1, the rare double of winning the Hobart and Port Lincoln thus eluding the Adelaide-owned by Sydney-based Farr 47.

She placed fifth in the IRC division and only 19th in Racing Division 1, with the 161 nautical mile race a spinnaker run and reach almost all the way from the start on Friday afternoon.

Another wellknown Adelaide yachtsman, Geoff Boettcher, won the Racing Division 1 on corrected time with his much-travelled Murray/Burns/Dovell-designed 43-footer, Secret Mens Business.

Second place went Lincoln Cove, an Inglis 11.9 skippered by Ben Kelsey, third to the Dubois 13.4, Sweet Caroline, skippered by veteran Keith Flint. Under this handicapping system, War Games placed only 15th.

Racing Division 2 went to the Port Lincoln entry, Rhythm, skippered by Andy Clough, with Phoenix (David Saies) second and Speakeasy (Bill Strangways) third.
