Golding sends congratulations to Vendee Globe winners.
by Susan Preston Davis on 14 Feb 2001
Mike Golding was able to speak briefly to his shore team earlier today and
reports that things are much as they were yesterday - and as they are
expected to remain for the next couple of days. He is in hard upwind
conditions with some 41 knots of breeze from the North East and fairly
heavy but consistent seas with large waves. This afternoon's position
reports show that he is still averaging 8 - 9 knots as predicted.
Golding was pleased to hear that the four boats ahead of him were having a
frustrating battle with very light airs, slowing them down considerably,
and allowing Golding to pick up a little time on them.
When asked about the achievements of Michel Desjoyeaux and Ellen MacArthur
Golding said
'I think they both did really well. It's great to see that single-handed
sailing is reaching new levels of professionalism which they have both
demonstrated - I only wish I was there with them. Send them my most
sincere regards for a most fantastic race'
