Mumm 30's at JOG nationals

by Stewart Lewis on 25 Jan 2001
Kyle Tyrill's Brand new Mumm30, Art of War, is the winner of Race 1 - Super
30 Nationals - Mumm 30 One Design Division

The first race of the Mumm 30 Port Stephens Regatta started in Pittwater on
Monday afternoon. Five Mumm 30's are competing in the regatta, with four of
these racing in one design configuration.

The first race of the seven race series was a 70nm overnight race from
Pittwater to Port Stephens.

The race started in a light 10knot NE breeze. Art of War, Chris Tilett's On
the Edge and Stewart Lewis's Enigma got the better of the start with the
three getting an early break, with Chris Tilett taking the lead. Art of War
and On the Edge then went left coming out of broken bay and ran out of wind
on the northern shore, while Enigma, Peter McNamara on Addiction and Mal
Jones's Mumms the Word stuck to the right and got into the NE breeze
sooner. This gave these three a good break on the others in the beat up the
coast. At the midnight sched, 5 hours into the race, Enigma led the Mumm
30's, with Addiction and Mumms the Word about 1.5 miles behind and Art of
War and On the Edge a further mile or so back.

For the next 9 hours, Enigma, Mumms the Word and Addiction stuck in close
to the rocks, while Art of War and On the Edge stayed a little out to sea
to take better advantage of the stronger NE breeze offshore. This resulted
in substantial gains for the seaward boats, with the race ultimately being
won by Art of War in her first ever race, with On The Edge next, then
Addiction, Mumms the Word and Enigma.

Wednesdays racing comprises two offshore windward leeward races.

24th January 2001

The wind was a steady NE 20-25 knots with a strong tide running into the
wind creating a short chop.

In race 1, On the Edge and Stewart Lewis's Enigma got a break from the rest
of the fleet, with On the Edge Leading at every mark and taking ultimately
winning from Enigma, followed by Addiction, Mumms the Word and Art of War.

Race 2 saw slightly stronger winds in which Mumms the Word revelled, taking
a comfortable lead for the whole race. Chris Tillet had another good
performance to get a second, with Engma coming back from missing the start
by 1 minute to just pinch out Addiction for third place. Art of War did not
compete in the third race after suffering sail damage in race 2.

Chris Tilett now leads overall from Mumms the Word, Enigma, Art of War then
Addiction.

Thursdays race is the 3 islands race off Port Stephens, starting and
finishing off peppers anchorage resort.
