Computer Associates J J Giltinan International 18-foot skiff Championship Heat 6

by Leigh Maloney on 14 Jan 2001
Tim Robinson sailing the UK boat Great Britain today took out HEAT 6 of the
Computer Associates J J Giltinan International 18-foot skiff Championship
but the real race on the harbour was for second and third place between
Trevor Barnabas' Omega Smeg and John Harris' Rag & Famish Hotel.

Omega Smeg had to make three gallant recoveries today to finish in third
place, and was just nosed out by the Rag by 2 seconds at the finsh line.

Sailing in strong 20 knot southerly conditions today assisted Barnabas'
third place and helped to push him back into the lead overall on 25.4
points with Rag & Famish only 1.3 points behind on a close second. John
Winning's AMP Centrepoint is now back in third place overall after a sixth
placing today on 30.7 points.

'This would have to be one of the closest Championships yet,' Barnabas said
after the race. 'But we're very happy with the position we are in.'

The 2001 Giltinan trophy comes down to the wire for the final Heat tomorrow
(Sunday) when there is sure to be an exciting three way battle between
Barnabas, Harris and Winning.

Barnabas has previously won the prized Giltinan event five times and hopes
to equal Iain Murray's magnificent 6-time victory on the old 'Colour 7'.

The final determining heat of the Computer Associates J J Giltinan
International Championship starts at 3.00pm Sunday on Sydney Harbour.
