Harken Young 88 Nationals - Slipstream leads after Day 1

by Sail-World.com NZL on 9 Apr 2016 The Harken Young 88 Nationals 2016 got underway in light winds off in the Hauraki Gulf, off Rangitoto Island.

Leading the fleet is RNZYS skipper Nathan Williams and his crew on Slipstream III, who sailed a consistent day with a third, and two fourth’s. Williams is also the winner of the North Sails Young 88 Sprint series host by the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron over the summer.

Second place with a seventh, fourth and third is the youngest crew on the water - RNZYS Skipper Dave Hazard and his crew on Skitzo.

Third place is also representing the RNZYS Mike Sanderson’s Flash Gordon, taking one win, a second and a ‘U’ flag disqualification.

Fourth place and current leading the handicap scores is RNZYS Skipper Edward Massey on Undercover.

The fleet started out in the East Coast Bays off Rangitoto Island, after one abandoned race the Race Committee lead by Celia Carson upped anchor in search of the wind.

The Race Committee travelled back to Northern Leading area and completed three races before heading back to the dock. Principal Race Officer Celia Carson described it as a ‘trying’ day but that with the help of her team will hope to compete more races tomorrow.
