Two Retirements as the Seaway came up.

Two Retirements as the Seaway came up.

Terry Mullen’s IceFire Mummery 45, notified Telstra Race Control early this morning at 5.40am that she was retiring with a split mainsail. IceFire joins the long list of south bound boats who have over the years “run out of main”.

As the trend has swung back to stiffer boats in both IMS and IRC classes many skippers now elect to take two mains in the Sydney to Hobart race, as mains are often flogged during reefing, particularly in a lumpy seaway as everything take longer and mains can easily be destroyed in 60 seconds. Terry had mounted an excellent campaign for this Hobart race and he and his crew are bitterly disappointed.

Orsa Maggigore, the Italian Navy training ketch retired this morning at 10 am, citing concern about crew inexperience. The round the world training vessel carries a large compliment of cadets and the skipper decided that the likely conditions would be too much for his new crop of cadets.
