Right Prescription from Dr.Who in Maria Island Race

by Peter Campbell on 20 Nov 2000
Veteran Hobart yachtsman Roger Jackman has made a clean sweep of line and
handicap honours with his 52-footer Doctor Who in the 180 nautical mile
Maria Island Race, sailed off the south-east coast of Tasmania over the
weekend.

Doctor Who sailed a brilliant race to lead the fleet around the course and
hold her time as the highest rating yacht to take first place under both IMS
and PHS handicap categories.

The Davidson 52 was one of eight Tasmanian yachts which started the Maria
Island Race on Friday evening as a qualifier for the 2000 Sydney to Hobart
Race at Christmas.

Despite light overnight winds, the Doctor Who held on to her lead around
the island and back to the River Derwent, crossing the finish line off
Battery Point at 26 minutes after midnight today.

Next to finish, an hour and a half later, was Stephen Keal's Cyclone,
followed by Craig King's Interum, with the last of the 13 starters finishing
late this morning after a near windless night in the Derwent and Storm Bay.

'They sailed an excellent race, as Doctor Who is not noted for her light
weather performance,' Race director Rowan Johnstone, from the Royal Yacht
Club of Tasmania, said in Hobart today as the tailenders sailed up the
Derwent.

Doctor Who sailed the 180 nautical mile race in 1 day 5 hours 26 minutes 6
seconds and on IMS corrected times won the IMS division by 2 hours 55
minutes 52 seconds from the little sloop Solandra (Craig Escott) with
Breakaway (Wayne Banks-Smith) beating Cyclone (Stephen Keal) by just 20
seconds for third place.

In the PHS handicap division, Doctor Who won easily from Cyclone, Breakaway
and B-52, which are also nominations for the 2000 Telstra Sydney to Hobart.
