Thames Estuary Yacht Club hosted a fund raising handicap youth race in aid of the RNLI on 8 June 2002. Twenty One boats from four clubs, Thames Estuary, Essex, Halfway and Thorpe Bay raced a large oval course in a steady Force 3 along the Southend coastline. The RNLI Challenge was the first of hopefully a series of annual interclub Youth Races to be held in Southend.
After a poor start Donald Wetherall, TEYC, sailing his Yachts and Yachting sponsored boat was first Topper home and on handicap overall winner. Seven classes of boat competed with a Dart 16 helmed by Chris Brook and Sam Brooks, TEYC, first past the post, but James Chesire, EYC, capitalising on a good start won the Faster Handicap Class in a Topaz. In the Optimist class Zoe Ager, TEYC, romped home, her training with the RYA Eastern Zone squad paying off.
