Lack of Wind on Last Day of MDL Torquay Royal Regatta

Day 3 report, Wednesday 25th August 1999, Torquay

There was frustration for the bigger boats on the last day of the Marina Developments' sponsored Torbay Regatta. With heavy rain and little or no wind, the boats in the IRC and PY cruiser classes made their way out of Torquay Marina into the gloom, hoping for an improvement in conditions. Their final race of the series was scheduled to be a longer race on an Olympic course. However, after a 2 hour postponement, Race Officer Peter Rumbelow was forced to abandon racing for the day.

Therefore, the overall positions for final trophies were decided after four races for the three IRC classes and PY cruiser class. Class 1 overall champion was Robert Barr's BH36, "Maverick" of the RTYC, who finished in the top three in each of the four races. His points total of 5 was one ahead of "Quokka", skippered by Peter Rutter, also of RTYC. In third place in Class 1 was Zarafa, skippered by Lymington's Peter Scholfield.

There were runaway victories in both Classes 2 and 3, with the top yachts each winning all four races. In IRC Class 2, Roger & Sally Lean, who have both been sailing in Torbay for over 20 years, won the Century Cup with their X-332, Celavie. Second in class was Don Forster from the Hamble River SC on his half tonner, Super Hero and third was Exocet, owned by John & Stella Dyer of the Royal Western YC.

In IRC Class 3 Jonathan Butler's Impala 28 proved unbeatable and won the Marina Developments Dartside Cup, as overall class winner. Brixham's Tim Whitehead was second with "New Moon" and Norman Broom (also Brixham) sailed to third place overall with "Hooligan."

The Addison Gold Cup which is presented to the best IRC yacht without any discards was jointly won by Roger & Sally Lean ("Celavie") and Jonathan Butler ("Peanut').

Running alongside the individual competition is a team competition for the Torbay Admiral's Cup. Teams must contain one boat from each of the IRC classes and the winners were the team comprising "Maverick" (R Barr), "Celavie" (R & S Lean) and "New Moon" (T Whitehead). Commenting on this year's Regatta, Tim Whitehead from Brixham praised the race committee, saying: "We've had fantastic racing on excellent courses and the only thing missing this week has been the sunshine."

The Dragons, Flying Fifteens, Cadet and PY dinghies all managed their fifth and final race in a light South Westerly when the clouds eventually lifted and the sun appeared, lifting everyone's spirits.

The winner of the Torbay Chamber of Trade Cup for Dragons was "Excalibur" owned by Paul Patenall, who won all 5 races. Second was Graham Jenkins' "Basilisk" and third was "Heuschrecke" owned by Sandy Ellis. The Flying Fifteen overall winner "Bit of Fluff", owned by Julian Cook, who had 3 first places. Overall runner up was Mike Oaten aboard "Miffy" with Nancy Llewellyn and "Feline Fox" in third.

Peter Ellis ("Creme de la Creme" won the Cadet Class from Charlotte Birbeck ("Great White") in 2nd and Matthew White ("No Mercy") in 3rd. The PY dinghy overall winner was Alex Reid on his Laser.
