Writing on Monday, August 24th, we have reached Race Day 4 of the 2026 International 14 World Championship, hosted in legendary style by the Canadian I14 fleet and CORK/Sail Kingston.
The race management and local volunteers have been nothing short of exceptional - delivering slick communication, swift decisions, and top-tier racecourse setups across some very tricky, dynamic conditions.
Practice Race
The action kicked off on Thursday in ultra-light, teasing conditions. The Race Officer kept the fleet on its toes by rolling through multiple practice starts while waiting for the thermal breeze to fill in—the perfect tonic to blow away travel cobwebs and sharpen starting line triggers.
By the third start, enough pressure built across the course to get a proper practice race under way. Navigating around autonomous robotic GPS marks, the fleet had an ideal opportunity to shake down before official championship racing commenced.
The Opening Ceremony
Thursday evening treated sailors and supporters to an opening ceremony at the Great Lakes Museum with local sailing and community dignitaries welcoming us to the club and the city. It served as a fantastic event and the opening salvo in a daily social programme designed to bring the international fleet together, swap tactical notes, and catch up with old friends from around the globe.
Day 1: Defying the Kingston Playbook (Race 1)
Friday's championship opener was briefly postponed as an early-morning easterly wind fought off the usual south-westerly thermal build. Once the breeze settled into a modest 6-8 knot range, Race 1 got under way over three laps with a downwind finish.
Local Kingston wisdom almost always dictates: "Bang the left corner." However, the leaders rolled the dice on a hard-right line with minimal manoeuvres—a gamble that paid off handsomely with cleaner air and better pressure:
Social debrief: After post-race food and cold beers at the boat park, the fleet migrated into town for an evening gathering at local institution The Brass Pub.
Day 2: Shift Hunting off Wolfe Island (Race 2)
Saturday delivered another light-air test from the south, devoid of thermal assistance. The Race Committee called for a gruelling 4-lap course with an upwind finish (5 full beats!), ensuring every leg was a tactical battleground.
With the breeze rolling over Wolfe Island, the top of the course was riddled with shifts and holes ready to punish anyone on the wrong phase. A tight gybe mark on the triangle demanded aggressive kite curling to keep these high-powered skiffs from capsizing.
Glen Truswell & Ed FitzGerald (GBR 1553, Scrumpet) carved out a commanding early lead up the first beat, holding on to take the gun despite encountering a massive hole/wind snake on an upwind leg.
Behind them, place changes came thick and fast over the final triangle and beat. Andy Shaw & Rob Struckett (GBR 1569, Bubble) dug deep to snatch 2nd right on the line ahead of 3rd-place Chili con Carbon (GER), with Adam Ovington & Stu Keegan (GBR 1565, Zog) locking in another solid 4th.
Social debrief: Sailors gathered downtown for an open-air screening of The Tragically Hip's iconic final concert, accompanied by top local culinary recommendations from the host fleet.
Days 3 & 4: Fresh to Frightening
Days 3 (Sunday) and 4 (Monday) brought a complete change of pace: a ferocious 20-25 knot westerly breeze kicking up a punishing 4-foot Kingston chop with waves stacked only a couple of seconds apart.
With boat-breaking conditions on the bay, the Race Committee prudently postponed racing on both days. The schedule will be made up using the designated lay day and scheduled multi-race days.
On Day 4 the frustrated USA team of John Clark and Cam McDonaldson tested the conditions to prove to the rest of the fleet that it was sailable, the footage is epic.
Life off the Water
Day 3 Dinners: Entrants and guests were split into mixed groups of ~8 (deliberately separating helms and crews) and dispatched to pre-booked restaurants across Kingston—a brilliant format to forge new friendships across national fleets.
Day 4 Live Gig: Tonight's entertainment features an open-air BBQ and concert headlined by none other than 'Hoist'—the Canadian I14 rock band—fuelled by local favorites Daft Brewing.
With high-adrenaline forecast updates and plenty of racing still to come, spirits across the boat park are sky-high!
