Regatta Week concludes with memorable Gold Cup finale
Nearly two thousand race entries at Norfolk Broads Yacht Club made for an excellent Wroxham Week, with seven days of competition, glorious sunshine and a range of wind directions providing hugely enjoyable sailing.
The week began with a windy Sunday. River Cruisers Shark and Moonshadow had a dramatic encounter, catching rigs, fortunately, both boats were freed and escaped without damage. Cuckoo was less fortunate after hooking the top of the wherry Solace's mast, resulting in her own mast breaking and damage to the wherry mast. The Yare & Bure One Design fleet also saw one boat almost sinking after a spectacular broach. Despite the early incidents, the week continued with a full programme of racing.
Numerous classes joined the regatta including traditional Broads fleets of River Cruisers, Yare & Bure One Designs, Norfolk Dinghies, Norfolk Punts and Broads One Designs as well as International Stars, Solos, ILCAs, Fevas, Optimists, Toppers, RS200s, 300s & 400s, Fireflys and Gulls. Two newly built Windsongs from Burnham Overy Staithe and a visiting Thames A Rater also joined the line-up to make for a real festival of sailing.
Thursday's Wroxham Open Regatta, provided a packed day of racing, beginning with the Waterman's Race, won by Ellie Thwaites, who collected the Barrel of Beer trophy. Jack Aitken won the Optimist races for the Bobby Stevenson Memorial Trophy and Raymond Page Trophy, while Chris Pank claimed the Allcomers A honours and the Claret Jug for River Cruisers whilst his son Will Pank took the Allcomers B Fast fleet for the Vice Commodore's Cup.
Nico Bentall in Avocet won the Broads One Design race for the Blakes Cup, Toby Pearce took the Yare & Bure One Design honours with the Silver Washed Challenge Vase, Ian Tims led the Yeoman fleet for the Tillet Goblet, and Colin Murray claimed the Star Cup. Matthew Ellis enjoyed success in the River Cruisers in Breeze, winning both the Maidie Centenary Trophy and Press Memorial Trophy.
The day culminated in the popular rowing races, one of Wroxham Week's most distinctive traditions. Plenty of determination, teamwork and good humour were on display.
Friday saw the annual charity Duck Race, another hugely popular event enjoyed from the shore and by the youngsters tasked with collecting the ducks afterwards. John Whitefoot took the honours.
Saturday morning saw the Dinghy Pursuit Race get under way, bringing together a range of dinghy classes in a closely fought contest. Will Pank claimed overall victory in his Firefly, with Tommie Gritt and Edward Clifford completing the top three. A great race allowing different classes and generations of sailors to compete together in a single fleet, and for competitors to chase down the top spot.
All week the racing was equally competitive. Jack Aitken collected several trophies, including the Down-the-Broad Optimist title, the Under-12 Pursuit Race award and the First Optimist prize in the Dinghy Challenge Trophy race. Henrietta Highfield topped the overall Optimist series winning The Garrincha Cup after a consistently impressive performance. Abigail Whitefoot was also recognised as the Most Improved Optimist Sailor, receiving the Brighton Model Yacht Trophy. The ILCA series was won by Ben Campbell and Henry Bridgman took the Topper trophy.
Across other fleets, Ian Tims claimed the Yeoman series, James Dugdale won the YBODs, Nick Gill took the Stewart Morris Shield in the Allcomers A, Chris Pank topped the lunchtime River Cruiser fast fleet, Chris Tuckett won the slow fleet, Stu Rix took the BOD honours, while Colin Murray finished as the leading Star, Rater and Punt sailor. Ian Tims was also presented with the Commodore's Barometer in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Norfolk Broads Yacht Club over the past year.
This year's programme saw the return of the historic Dinghy Challenge Trophy. Originally presented more than 75 years ago for a team match between Norfolk Broads Yacht Club and Trent Valley Sailing Club, the beautifully refurbished trophy has been reinstated as a perpetual Wroxham Week award thanks to the support of Anthony Landamore, Stuart Press and Geoff Evans.
The regatta built towards its traditional finale, the prestigious Diamond Jubilee Gold Cup. Flip Dugdale, crewed by her mother Gilly Foulds, claimed the trophy for the second time following a closely fought final race. Richie Dugdale, Flip's husband, finished runner-up with Robert Whitefoot as crew, while Ian Richardson and Henry Whipp took third place.
Tom Thwaites and his Dad, Matthew, finished fourth, and Tommie Gritt was the highest placed Broads One Design sailor, winning the Navigators & General Trophy. The result gave Flip and Gilly a memorable second Gold Cup victory with loud cheers from the shore, including those from Flip & Richie's two young sons.
Away from the sailing, Wroxham Week was as busy ashore as it was afloat. Competitors, families and visitors enjoyed a packed social programme all week, with club dinners, quizzes and a host of fun events. The celebrations culminated in a riotous Port and Starboard-themed evening, providing a fitting end to a memorable week of sailing and friendship.
None of it would be possible without the dedication of the many volunteers, race management and office teams who work tirelessly throughout the year and during the regatta to make Wroxham Week such a success.
