Francesco Bruni: "Atlanta 1996 was the beginning of my professional career"

As part of ILCA's "30 Years of Olympic ILCA Sailing" series, we speak with sailors who competed in the class's Olympic debut and reflect on what that experience means three decades on.
For Italian sailor Francesco Bruni, Atlanta 1996 was one chapter in a sailing career that would span Olympic competition, world championships, match racing, the America's Cup and professional sailing at the highest level.
Bruni arrived at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games as one of the leading sailors in the Laser class, having already claimed both the 1994 Laser World Championship in La Rochelle, France, and the 1994 Laser European Championship at Hayling Island, Great Britain.
Representing Italy in Savannah, he finished 12th in a highly competitive fleet that included some of the greatest names in Olympic sailing.
Atlanta would be the first of three Olympic appearances for Bruni. He later competed in the 49er class at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games and in the Star class at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, demonstrating a versatility that would become a hallmark of his career.
Beyond the Olympic arena, Bruni established himself as one of the most accomplished sailors of his generation. He has won world championship titles in several classes, including the TP52, Melges 24 and Melges 32, and achieved major success in match racing, winning both the Congressional Cup and the Gold Cup.
His career has also included a prominent role in the America's Cup with Luna Rossa, where he became one of the most recognisable figures of the Italian challenge, as well as involvement in SailGP and other leading professional sailing circuits.
More than two decades after Atlanta, Bruni continued to compete at the highest level, finishing runner-up at the 2018 Moth World Championship in Bermuda.
