Vendée Globe Day 69 morning update: Miranda Merron finally letting herself think about Cape Horn

Miranda Merron is finally allowing herself to think about Cape Horn, as she said on this morning's 0400hrs UC call. "I am in a NW'ly airflow and have just under 800 miles to go to Cape Horn and it is a little bit difficult to know what sails to put up because the breeze is building and there is no point in breaking anything now and so I am being a little bit conservative. And it is going to get windier before it goes to the W and gets lighter.
For now it is looking like I will be going quite close to Cape Horn but that could change. It has been extremely cold, very cold, the coldest I have been this whole race. I am not cold myself because I am well dressed but every time I am on deck my hands are frozen and you have that pain under your nails when your hands warm up again. I could wear gloves but it is difficult to do things and tie knots. But all is well. My last time at Cape Horn was 19 years ago when we sailed past on Amer Sports 2 in the Volvo Ocean Race with the crew. It is something I have not allowed myself to think about at all until yesterday. It is such a huge objective in this race and you look at the strategy to get to it, I just did not allow myself to think about it and so now I am really looking forwards to seeing it. 778 miles to go, and counting.
