A light wind day gave a different set of challenges on race day 2 for the 132 teams on Bravo track, as 420 racing got under way in around 7 knots.

The series discard kicked in after race 3, helping to shuffle up the leaderboards with some big moves up. Spanish sailors retain control at the top of the U19 and U17 leadeboards, but with a change of face in the U17 fleet.

Racing continues at Vilagarcia de Arousa in north-western Spain on Saturday 27 July, with 2 races scheduled for the U19 fleet to conclude the qualification series and decide who advances to gold and silver final series racing. The U17 fleet will contest another 2 races of their 12 race single series. Racing is scheduled to get under way at 1400 hours on Bravo course, with U17 first, then U19 Yellow followed by Blue.

U19 420

The 2019 Spanish National Champions, Conrad Konitzer/Fernando Rodriguez, retain top spot in the U19 leaderboard at the 420 Junior European Champions, with two more top 10 finishes of 8,1 on day 2. Israel still holds onto second, but with a switch in teams as Aviv Rozen/Tomer Hendel score a solid 2,5.

"Our goal is to have no discard until reaching the finals," commented Konitzer, and the pair are doing a great job of delivering.

With yesterday's 28th place discarded, Poland's Patryk Kosmalski/Tomasz Lewandowski could focus on their usual form, finishing inside the top 10 with scores of 1,2. The pair has enjoyed a busy and successful season, winning Kieler Woche and finishing 7th at the Youth Worlds, so will be satisfied to end day 2 in third place on the leaderboard.

Leading the women's line-up are Greece's Melina Pappa/Maria Tsamopoulou who sit in 9th overall.

A change in race track pace from Switzerland's Leon Fröhlich/Nathan Zwick saw the pair lead the yellow fleet to mark one, before settling for a 4th place finish. Sandwiched between high scoring results, today's performance will have been an acknowledgement of their potential when the stars align. A similar outcome for Spain's Giulietta Lang/Tess Provenzal in the blue fleet who scored a 4th in the day's opening race, following up with a 22nd but it was enough to shift them up from 26th at the start of the day to 18th by the end and rank as the second placed women's team.

Third placed women's team are Spain's Marina Garau/Blanca Cabot in 19th overall. The pair is performing with confidence in their first year of senior fleet racing, having finished 10th at this year's 420 Women's Worlds and winning the U17 women's event at last year's Worlds.

The Youth Worlds bronze medallists, Theresa Steinlein/Lina Plettner (GER) won the day's opening race in the blue fleet, but were knocked back with a 27th in the second race of the day. Sitting in 29th overall, the pair is counting an unusually high scorecard, particularly considering last month they finished second overall at Kieler Woche, third at Young Europeans Sailing and count other top three finishes earlier in the year.

The reigning 420 World Champions Martin Wizner/Pedro Ameneiro (ESP) won the second race of the day moving up 9 places as they edge closer to the top 10 and end day 2 in 13th overall.

Dropping 4 places go the 420 U17 World Champions Greece's Odysseas Spanakis/Konstaninos Michalopoulos who couldn't repeat yesterday's top 10 scores and end day 2 down from third to 7th.

U17 420

All change in the 420 U17 fleet as Spain's Antonio Martino/Joan Catala take over the lead from team mates Alberto Morales/Miguel Bethencourt but only by 1 point. Martino/Catala were held back by a penalty score from race 1 but with that now discarded count a consistent run of 1,7,1.

After a general recall in race 4, they led from start to finish, rounding mark 1 ahead and never easing up.

Moving into third are Austria's Rosa Donner/Sebastian Slivon.

Top placed women's team are Neus Ballester/Andrea Perello in 7th overall, with Noga Esther Tiano/Eden GUR second placed women in 9th overall and the USA's Vanessa Lahrkamp/Katherine Mcnamara third women in 13th overall, boosted up the overall ranking after winning race 3 in the 40 boat fleet. The Americans were falling short of the leading pack off the start, but clawed their way through the fleet to assert control.
