RS Tera North Inland Championship at Derwent Reservoir Sailing Club

by Carrie Bridgeman 8 Jun 2019 22:23 BST 1-2 June 2019

The RS Tera North Inland Championship was held at Derwent Reservoir Sailing Club. This was the second event of the North 2019 Traveller Series. The RS Tera North fleet joined in with the NEYTS on the Saturday with 36 boats (including 2 Tera pro and 14 Tera sport boats) out on the water completing 4 races.

There was one start for all the races on Saturday, which meant the Tera fleet could compete in the NEYTS handicap series. Saturday conditions were fair with wind gusts up to 15 knots. The mark layers where kept busy with wind shifts throughout the afternoon. The race committee successfully completed 4 races. Top results for Tera sailors where Matthew Rayner in a Tera Sport finished 3rd overall and Esme Barraclough in Tera Pro finished 1st girl and 5th overall both from Yorkshire Dales sailing club.

Sunday's conditions changed with higher winds forecasted. Fifth race of the weekend started but the wind built up and gusts increased to over 20 knots. A few of the sailors struggled to reach the windward mark and half the fleet capsized. The safety team did an excellent job retrieving sailors and boats. All sailors were ok and the top six sailors managed to sail on and complete the race. Racing was then postponed to access the weather. Unfortunately the wind gusts still increased and the race officer made the difficult decision to abandon racing for the day.

With five races completed over the weekend the RS Tera Pro North Inland Champion is Esme Barraclough and the RS Tera Sport North Inland Champion is Matthew Rayner for the second consecutive year. Both from Yorkshire Dales sailing club. Top three results for both fleets are:

1st Pro Esme Barraclough (Yorkshire Dales SC)
2nd Pro Eillish Graham (South Shields SC)

1st Sport Matthew Rayner (Yorkshire Dales SC)
2nd Sport William Bailey (Yorkshire Dales SC)
3rd Sport John Bridgeman (Leigh & Lowton SC / Coniston SC)
First under 10 year old Lewis Gordon (Sunderland SC)

Next events: 22nd & 23rd June at South Shields SC and 29th & 30th June at Filey SC.
