Growing Raceweek's Footprint

Since MBS took over the regatta in 2013, one of the goals has been to grow the regatta's international footprint. In particular to increase the number of sailors who charter local boats and fly in to race, adding both an international perspective to the competition and benefitting Phuket's local economy also.

The trend of charterers is increasing and owners Byron and Rung Jones went on a road trip to Australia last year and visited a number of Australian yacht clubs promoting Raceweek and sailing in Phuket. In Byron's words, "the response was overwhelming. We were welcomed with open arms wherever we went and it was very encouraging how many Australian sailors knew of Cape Panwa Hotel Phuekt Raceweek. It can be a costly exercise for an international crew to fly in and compete, but the interest is there and the numbers are growing, and since our return we already have new entries from Australia which is a great and encouraging start."

Entries and Early-Early Bird Entry

In an effort to keep the regatta as cost-effective as possible, organisers have introduced a super special entry fee for boat and for crew this year. These rates finish on the 30th April so head to the registration page now to take advantage.

Many have already taken advantage of these special rates: The multihull classes are shaping up well with a full complement of locally-based Corsair Pulse 600s all chartered and entered and the monohull racers are entering in increasing numbers.

"It's our aim to try and split the fast 40-footers from the TP52s and similar boats, like we did last year, to ensure the fairest and most competitive racing for all," noted Byron.

New Faces (sort of)

We're very pleased to welcome a new sponsor to the regatta this year – Workforce Marine Asia. While new to the regatta, the face behind the company is not and is known to everyone in the Austral-Asia sailing community, Ray Roberts. Ray has competed at the regatta four times and won it four times, and will again be competing this year. In addition to rating the regatta as one of his favourites, Ray sees the power of the right kind of event sponsorship and has joined Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek 2019. Watch this space for further announcements on this in due course.

Cape Panwa Hotel continue their title sponsorship of the regatta and Kantary Bay Hotel as joint host venue – both celebrating their seventh year of sponsorship. Other sponsors for 2019 include the Tourism Authority of Thailand, Mount Gay, Castle Creek Wines, Chang, Illuzion Cruises, Intentional Law Office, Asia Catamarans, ISS Security Services, North Sails, Phuket International Hospital, Electrical Marine, Phuket Boat Lagoon, Krabi Boat Lagoon. All have sponsored for multiple years are we are proud to welcome them back.
