Dart 18 World Championship at Royal Varuna Yacht Club - Overall

by Mark Hamill-Stewart 22 Feb 2019 14:52 GMT 16-22 February 2019

What a final day! 10 to 14 knots of wind with a cloudless sky yet again. "This is normal" said one member prompting the thought that, if this is normal, why aren't there more world champions from the Royal Varuna Yacht Club? No party last night so sailors were fit and ready to enjoy an excellent day of sailing competition.

48 Dart 18s on the start line today. Races 9 and 10 of the series saw a battle between first and second and a further battle for a third place podium place. Congratulations to Dave and Louise Roberts the 2017 World Champions who managed to regain the championship to be the 2019 Dart 18 World Champions. They were followed up by Royal Varuna's own Gareth Owen (Dart World Champion 1998!) and Hebe Hemming who could not capitalise on the equal nett points of the day before. Already a well known name in Dart, International Cadet and Laser sailing, talk in the club house was to make him an "Official Legend" being runner up and over 60! Well done Gareth and Hebe who is well under 60.

With four points separating places 3, 4 and 5 the day before, there was a three-way battle for podium third. Daniel Norman with crew Alyesha Monkman clawed their way to bronze with a discarded 21st then a first in races 9 and 10. Herve Le Maux and Nicola Davies slipped to fourth from the day before (Nicola "I will be dreaming of my Varuna adventure tomorrow!"). David Lloyd and crew Hayley Smith achieved overall fifth with fairly consistent top class sailing throughout the series.

David and Louise Roberts have been runners up in 2016 and 2012. Gareth Owen has been runner up in 1991, 1995, and 2006. Based on Gareth's longevity as a top performer, we can expect David and Louise Roberts to be at the top of their game for many years to come!

Damrongsak and brother Kitsada, Thai Hobie Champions, dropped to eleventh overall which was a very creditable finish given the excellent standard of competitive sailing among the top tier Dart sailors.

All agree that this has been an excellent event and the Royal Varuna Yacht Club is proud to have been the venue.

With the support of the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand, special thanks to all the sponsors of what is turning out to be a near perfect sailing event: The Ministry of Tourism and Sport, Pattaya City Government, Bangkok Hospital, France Catamaran, Big Chilli, Fiona and Larry, Ocean Marina, Pattaya Mail, Rooster and ThaiBev.

Decisions, decisons.. When you have more than 160 boats in Poole Harbour doing battle with a wind that's oscillating back and forth, you can almost hear the cogs whirring as the crews decide which end of the line to start and which way to go up the first beat. Posted on 22 Aug 2023
