As the 2018 season draws to a close, the Supernova Committee have taken a moment to look back on the last year, which has been another fantastic one for the Supernova Class.

Noble Marine Travellers Circuit

From March to October we facilitated the Noble Marine Travellers' Circuit – a varied set of events which cater for all needs. Over the year there were 15 events, great turnouts and around 130 individual competitors.

We also provided two training days for FREE to members which featured RYA coaches.

The winners of the events are shown below:

  • Girton – Tim Hand
  • Cotswold – Adrian Snell
  • Bartley – Cliff Milliner
  • Bough Beech – Richard Lambert
  • Hunts – Steve Hawley
  • Bolton – Alex Collins
  • Scammonden Dam – Derrik Jackson
  • Swarkestone – Paul Undrell
  • Carsington – Event cancelled, no wind!
  • Combs – Eric Haselden
  • Glossop – Tony Bleasdale
  • Bowmoor – Gavin Young
  • Burton – Mike Gibson
  • Chase – Cliff Milliner
  • Haversham – Richard Pakes
Massive congratulations to Nick Whiles and Dave Stephen who took part in every single event! Nick managed to win the Travellers Traveller trophy for the second year in a row.

Overall it was very tight at the top with Tony Bleasdale finishing in second, just ahead of Mark Meadows. The overall winner and Noble Marine travellers champion for 2018 is Garry Butterfield from Bartley sailing club. Garry was very chuffed to have won the overall series and had this to say: "The Noble Marine Travellers series achieves an ideal balance between being competitive and friendly. All of the top guys are ready to help so competing in it is the best way to improve your sailing."

The Committee also used some of the sponsorship to purchase a new sail which was raffled off based on the number of events attended by each sailor. The lucky winner (who was very happy!) was Serena Stewardson.

Championship events

Oxford Carriers Winter Championship

We started the year in February with our Winter Championships (sponsored by Oxford Carriers). 40 boats made it to Bowmoor and it was Cliff Milliner from Cotswold Sailing Club who once again took the championship title – a sign of the year ahead for Cliff?

National Championship

The big event during the year was the national championships at Plas Heli, which featured sponsorship from Hartley Boats. We had over 100 boats in attendance again, the third year in a row!

We had a new champion in Sam Knight from Bartley. The light winds suited Sam perfectly and he sailed very well over the 3 days.

The team prize was won by Bartley, bucking the recent dominance of Cotswold and Bolton.

Inland Championship

Challenging conditions at Blithfield saw varied results across the two days, but it was Cliff Milliner who took the overall win just ahead of Cotswold stablemate Gavin Young.

We would like to thank our sponsors for all of their help and support over the year.

Looking forward

As we move into 2019 we have another exciting year ahead, with Class Association membership up on prior years. The builders have a steady flow of new boats coming out which is supporting continued growth of this fantastic and exciting class.

The Travellers' Circuit is close to being finalised which will reflect member feedback from the AGM. Our big event of the year, the national championships, is taking place at the end of June in Paignton – we already have over 60 boats signed up!
