Yesterday marked the opening day of the 2018 Optimist Asian and Oceanian Championship, hosted by the Ngwe Saung Yacht Club and Resort with the support of the Myanmar Yachting Federation.

Although it was a long bus journey to the venue from Yangon for all the teams and officials, being here, is like a little slice of paradise. The venue is stunning, and the organisers have gone out of their way to make sure that every detail has been taken care of.

Many of the teams have been arriving over that past few days to get used to the heat and humidity and to recover from the jet lag. The last teams arrived yesterday and have passed through measurement. Most of the teams went out for an unofficial practice race.

In total, 129 sailors are participating from 16 different nations - 14 from Asia and Oceania (AUS, CHN, FIJI, HKG, IND, JPN, KOR, MYA, NZL, OMA, SGP, SRI, THA and TPE) and two countries from the Americas (CAN and the USA).

Last night, the teams participated in the Opening Ceremony where they proudly represented their country in the 'parade of nations' followed by a dinner by the pool and a cultural presentation.
