Hansa World and International Championships in Hiroshima, Japan - Day 2

by Tomoko Nishi 16 Oct 2018 11:17 BST 14-18 October 2018

The second race day of 2018 Hansa Class World & International Championship held one race for double handed classes and two races for single handed classes. The wind was also weak today so the sailors had to concentrate on how to find the breeze.

Among such difficult conditions, Vera Voorbach from the Netherlands showed overwhelming speed. She jumped up to first place in the Liberty class. Two Japanese competitors, Takumi Niwa racing in the Hansa 303 Single class and Yui Fujimoto racing in the Hansa 2.3 Single class, are also on top of the leader board.

Takumi Niwa (23 years old), who was the captain of the yacht club during high school and represented Japan in the Para World Sailing Championship which was held in the USA this September, had this to say: "There are many islands in Hiroshima's ocean so it influences the way the winds oscillate and makes it is difficult to sail. A Para World medallist also participates in the same class as me so my goal for this event is to defeat the medallist and become the best in the world. I really enjoy moving towards my goal. It would be better if the wind blows a little more... I hope."

Tomorrow the single class will be racing from 10 am and the double class will race from 1 pm. Many sailors and participants are looking forward to the fellowship party that will be happening after the race in the afternoon. It should be as enjoyable as the races!
