The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) is seeking an enthusiastic and forward thinking non-executive director to join its Board.

We are looking for experienced individuals with strong critical thinking skills who are capable of applying independent judgment to work effectively with other executive and non-executive directors.

Following a skills evaluation, the Board is keen to balance its composition and skills and seeks to receive applications from candidates with business experience relating to any of the following fields: marketing and communications, sports administration, or legal.

A recognised qualification in public relations, marketing or law is desirable plus wider knowledge and experience or a meaningful period of involvement in the management of related activities in complex organisations.

The RYA Chair, Chief Executive and Finance Director sit on the Board with a further seven non-executive directors appointed on the basis of personal competencies. You will serve a four year term with effect from this year's AGM. Those elected will have the opportunity to stand for a further term.

The RYA Board meets six times a year, this role is not remunerated however basic travel expenses are paid. We welcome applicants from the whole of the UK.

The role of the Board is to supervise the management of the Association's business and to discharge the responsibilities of the directors under the Companies Act.

The Board's main duties are to:

  • Lead on Corporate Governance
  • Develop long term Strategic Plans
  • Support operational management and approve the annual operating plan and operating budgets
  • Supervise risk management and safety matters for the Association
  • Lead on our obligations regarding the Association's Stakeholder engagement strategy
Application

The RYA actively promotes diversity in its workforce and welcomes applications from all sections of the community. In line with our Diversity Action Plan we are keen to achieve a more diverse Board and particularly welcome applications from under-represented groups, in particular people from ethnic minorities and people with disabilities.

In order to maintain gender balance we are particularly keen to attract an additional female Board member. The RYA's Public Commitment Statement on Gender Diversity can be found here.

If you would like to join the Board and feel you have the relevant skills and experience, please download and complete an Assessment Form. Assessment forms must be emailed to Dave Strain, Finance Director by 5pm on Friday, 14 September 2018. Please also include a covering letter, Equality Monitoring Form and CV/Career summary.
